I read today in the Tennessean newspaper that Gaylord fired long time WSM radio operations manager Kyle Cantrell. He has also been released from his Grand Ole Opry announcer position. They also fired legendary dj Johnny K and nightime "Opry Star Spotlight" dj Matthew Gillian.

Having spent some time with Matthew in the studio, I really hate all of this for him, but also the others.

Who's next on the Gaylord Hitlist???....

I'd like to see all the other good guys & gals "Walk" in protest! Although that's not very likely and understandably so! Maybe then, Gaylord would wake up and fly right! But, I doubt that also! Soon all we'll have are memories of better days! I'd like to see better days start somewhere else! It's next to a crime! "Big John" http://community.webtv.net/KeoniNui/doc0

<Gaylord spokeperson Jim Brown said consolidation was ordered to improve the overall profitability of the station, and the deceision was made in an effort to promote the long-term growth and success of the station. He also commented that the station was not in any financial trouble and the format would remain the same as well as remaining home to the Grand Ole Opry.

Although good changes are good for any business, the firing of key folks within management of WSM could spell huge problems down the road for the station's ability to remain at the forefront of traditional country music. These are not, in my opinion, wise decisions, and rank with the decisions that Gaylord has made over the last several years, including destroying the Opryland theme park, building a mall to sell all rights to it away only eleven months later, selling off of TNN to New Yorkers, changing the staff and personality of the live Opry telecasts to reflect other types of music unfitting for an Opry crowd, etc.

I have been associated with Kyle Cantrill since the mid-1980's, and he was a crusader for the traditional country music that makes this station so wonderful. Eddie Stubbs now holds the place that was occupied by Kyle until his arrival, and I, in fact, remember the Classic Saturday show that Kyle did when he introduced the radio listeners to Eddie Stubbs and handed the reigns over to Eddie in September, 1997. Kyle has been an advocate for the traditional country music since his arrival at WSM in the very early 1980's. Many of you will remember that he did an all night traditional country music show in the early mornings, and was a beacon to those of us who were students of the music and studied it diligently.

Although Kyle Cantrill is gone from radio station WSM, he will not be forgotten for the wonderful things that he did for those of us who knew him.

In addition, KK Wilson, Matthew Gilliam, Johnny Koval (known as Johnny K), Allen Dennis, assistant promotion director Trish Matthews, and Kyle Cantrell's assistant and secretary Carolyn Davis are included in this round of firings from Gaylord. I am sure that each of the people that were let go have contributed to the health of WSM and the shows that it produces both on the AM station and on the FM station. Please think of each of these people in your thoughts today. These are a part of the family that I have grown up with literally, since arriving in Nashville June 1, 1983.

This also spells the possible end of the Opry Star Spotlight, heard weeknights on WSM AM and hosted by Matthew Gilliam from 9:30 to midnight. As well as Matthew, Johnny K was the announcer for the overnight hours between 12 midnight and 5 am Monday through Saturday.

These will all be missed as the contributed any good things to WSM through the last sevral years and this marks the end of yet another era that made its mark on the history of WSM.>>

Sad to say but nothing in Country Music can or will survive while the name Gaylord is attached. The Opry which is slowly dying out as the mainstays get the shaft will be a history within a few years. If only the present Members would just band together, stick together and screw the Gaylords for a change. They want to level the building anyway. And better to quit with dignity than to get kicked in the dignity. Country music or the name country music is being milked dry and when the milk is gone I wonder what type of music the new regime will say they are next.?

It's not strictly Country, but listen to Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers latest song "The Last DJ"
"There goes the last human voice, there goes your freedom of choice"
"The boys upstairs want to know how much you'll pay
For what you used to get for free"
I'll bet it's not on the Gaylord playlist!
Cheers

Where is Vince Gill, Ricky Scaggs, Alan Jackson, George Strait and Garth Brooks now? Don't they realize they are all being targeted for extinction? Some of these people with money better do someting. This is cultural genocide.

Alan is probably the only one out of that list that would say anything..They now are all comfortable and never need to work again. The Opry has not regenerated any new artist that will devote themselves weekly monthly or one pinchion of the time the past members did.As soon as the profit disapears the doors close. Haryl Hensley better cover his Ars.I wonder if the New WSM talk station will continue to broadcast the longest running radio show ever. Pretty soon gaylord will sell out the OPryland hotel to some Indians and I don't mean Native Americans.

my comments from Jan 2002
WSM AM and the OPRY are very vital elements that have survived the changes in time and should continue to do so. I believe it should be more them monetary issues that should be considered including the jobs of some of the most knowledgeable Disk Jockeys in any field of music.

I am a long-time fan of country music and have been playing music for a few years as well. I would like to publically thank Janice for making this petition available for folks like us to sign. I especially want to thank you, Janice, for picking a site that is "user-friendly for us folks who are visually impaired or totally blind and must rely on some type of screenreader to let us know what our computers are doing. Speaking for myself..and anyone who may have used a screenreader before, I know what it's like to encounter a website that isn't too accessible for us. My appoligies if this isn't the right forum to post this type of a message. But I had heard of this petition and had tried to go to it before..with no luck. It was on this great forum that I found the link to the petition and clicked on it! I was delighted to find that I could get to it just fine. I can't say that management will listen. But I'm glad to at least have the chance to speak my mind on the subject. I was fortunate enough to correspond with Kyle Cantrell back in the 198-'s when he did that all-night show on the Music Country Radio Network. And as great as I think that Eddie Stubbs is, it was Kyle who helped to sort of educate me about who was playing on what. I feel that management has done him..as well as Mathew, Johnny, Trish Mathews K. K. Wilson..they didn't deserve this! One more thing before I go..I wonder if anybody knows how I could get in touch with Kyle just to let him know that he's got a bunch of folks out here pulling for him? Everyone take care..and Janice, Thanks again!

I offered "Johnny K" a part-time job with us at WEKT. Said he'd let me know something in a few days. Nick
