I just got Ry Cooder's latest CD, a duet with Cuban guitarist Manuel Galban called Mambo Sinuendo. If you liked the Buena Vista Social Club, and if you liked The Vanduras, then this CD is right up your alley.
I'd call it Cuban surf-twang. It's all instrumental, although there are a couple of songs with minimal vocals (the vocals are treated as another instrument).
Ry Cooder plays his PA Bigsby reissue tripleneck steel on a couple of cuts, and there's a picture of him playing steel in the inside liner notes.
You can see other pictures here. I recommend the CD!

This is a very nice CD. Ry thanks 'Paul Warnik' in the liner notes. Brad, thanks for the comparison to the Vanduras.

There's a fairly large piece on Ry in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, where they go with him on a record buying spree in NYC. Here is a quote about a country album he found and bought:

" With country, it's hard to penetrate the thick layers of commercialism that have been applied like shellac coatings over the real thing".

"That's a fact, and I don't mind saying it. I'll offend all kinds of people, I guess, But what we're looking for here is something really moving and interesting and....Here it is! Speedy West featuring Jimmy Bryant. 'There's Gonna Be A Party' Just dig the muscianship. They were in my mind when I was trying to think up this (Mambo Sinuendo) thing. They were so good."

Just picked this CD up too. some nice stuff though I think the out-and-out Latin material is stronger than the Latin/noir material. Watch those ergonomics Ry, and put your knees under the steel!.
