One that Mr Renn Sparked me to think of off the same Beatles Album:

Some of these are the ones that reeally have stuck with me.

Life goes on Within you, and Without you.

John Lennon

How does it Feel to be the Brand New Mister Me?

M-Mel Tillis.

So I said "You're gonna pay, both you and Dave, cause I'm gonna see you in
your grave."

And they laughed at me... and then I shot 'em. And then I dragged their
cheatin', schemin' bones to Miller's Cave

M-Mel

Does any body have a little black book I can borrow? Cause the girls in mine are all dead or in the Old Folks Home.

So turn me loose and point me towards the party. Good music and women and liquor and neon lights.

And don't some tryin to find me for a month of Sundays, cause I'm gonna have me a month of Saturday Nights.

ET.

There's a new star in heaven tonight.

ET.

"But your story I'm not Buyin. And it's all over but the Cryin.

Hank Jr.

My Love for you has died, like the grass out on the lawn, and tonite I'll wed another, Dear John.

Kitty Wells.

She's much too young to realize why mommy can't come home. And that her daddy wanted things this way.

We kiss goodbye and my heart breaks, to walk away alone To have to be a mommy for a day.

KW

In the early morning rain with a dollar in my hand, and an achin in my heart, and my pockets full of sand.

LWIII?

Well he's traded off his Martin, but his troubles are not over, cause his feet are nearly frozen and the sun is sinking low. Won't you listen to me brother, if you ever loved your mother then pull over on the shoulder if you're going Milwaukee way. It's 10 degrees and getting colder down by Boulder Dam today.

GL

..gonna lay down my old guitar. Well I wish I could tie it to my side, and take it along with me.

Dunno.

I killed her dead as she could be because she would not marry me.

( Banks of the Ohio-?-)

Gotta be at least as many of these kind..

A go go girl called my hand. I said "I cain't, I'm a married man. Said "If you ain't gonna steel, then you better not prowl."

Hi, it's Mr Picky Jnr here
Within You, Without You was written by George Harrison
In the early morning rain, with a dollar...
was written by Gordon Lightfoot.

As discussed on a previous thread, I believe Shel Silverstein wrote some of the greatest humorous AND serious songs in country music...
"You're headed somewhere, but I've been to somewhere,
And found it was nowhere at all,
And I've got a couple more years on you babe and that's all".

And anyone who's into lyrics and story songs should try to hear Bobby Bare's version of Silverstein's "Rosalie's Good Eats Café"...

Nick
P.S. Also, "This Guitar Is For Sale", also recorded by Bobby Bare... talk about "Sad Songs And Waltzes", there's one for sure...

It's a fine line between best and worst sometimes, but i'd like to nominate almost everything by John Prine in the "best" category.
-Let'talk dirty in Hawaiian. (Just the idea of it)
-Lake Marie: "the wind was blowing, especially through her hair" "...trying to save our marrige and perhaps cath a few fish, whatever came first"
-Jesus, the missing years.
-Space monkey.
-Dear Abby.
-Souvenirs.
-Quit hollerin' at me.

And the list goes on.

Eric, the line you quoted: ",,not saying I beat the Devil, but I drank his beer for nothing..." is from "To Beat the Devil", written by KK. I seem to recall that Johnny Cash had recorded it at some point. One of my favorites, as is also "The Pilgrim" which you quoted. I'd say they ain't writing songs like that anymore, but Tom Russell for one is writing some dandys, for example:

"How's the weather in Winnipeg
broke down nag with the bandaged legs at Assiniboia Downs
the night we painted the town
dark dark blue".

Great thread - it's one thing to hit on songs you think are silly, but another to come out and fess up to the ones you love......

I felt that way until the summer of 74. I was hitch hiking at the east end of N Dakota and got picked up my a guy in a scout with a V-8 stuffed in it. He had to drive 45 cause the driveline was out of line. He had a "roll of crosstops" a few beers and a huge jug of coffee. Turned out he was going a mile from my house in Portland. We took the "scenic route". He wanted to see "some country".

He also had an 8 track tape player, and only ONE tape. Pretzel Logic. That night we ran out of gas, and had to siphon gas out of a Hesston. My mouth was raw from eating the crosstops, chain smoking cigarettes, leaded stale gas and drinking cold coffee. Spiders were appearing on the windshield. "You were just Italian in their eyes.."

After thirty or forty times of hearing Rikki don't lose that number, at about White Sulphur Sprgs in MT I bailed out, and said goodbye. went to the hearest redneck bar, drank about two dozen beers, walked to the edge of town, sacked out under a juniper. After I woke up, it was about 5 years until I could bear another "Is there Gas In the Car" or "Babylon Sisters, shake it". Oh it's great music, but I think it made a little too much of an impression on me...

I'll sure never forget the lyrics tho..

"I Used To Be A Country Singer" written by
Steve McGowen, recorded by Gordon Lightfoot.

..."I was sittin' in my hotel room strummin'
my old guitar * Not much to do when you're far away, playin' some smokey bar * I was feelin' a little empty and feelin' a little blue * When the maid came in and asked me, if she could do my room"...

..."I put down my old guitar, and she gave me a smile * She had a crusty voice and a drinker's look, but she had a friendly style * She dusted my room and made my bed and she talked of days gone-by * She spoke of when she wooed the men, a tear came to her eye..."

[chorus]"...(and she said)... I used to be a country singer * I could sing a mean Patsy Cline * My husband he could yodel like Wilf Carter * Kitty Wells was a real good friend
of mine..."

I think "She's Leaving Home' by the Beatles has very poignant lyrics.

Wednesday morning at five o'clock as the day begins,
Silently closing her bedroom door,
Leaving the note that she hoped would say more.
She goes down stairs to the kitchen clutching her hand kerchief.
Quetly turning the back door key,
Stepping outside she is free.

She ( We gave her most of our lives )
Is leaving ( Sacrificed most of our lives )
Home ( We gave her ev'rything money could buy )
She's leaving home after living alone for so many years.

Father snores as his wife gets into her dressing down.
Pick up the letter that's lying there,
Standing alone at the top of the stairs.
She breaks down and cries to her husband "Daddy, our baby's gone.
Why would she treat us so thoughtlessly,
Now could she do this to me."

She ( We never thought of ourselves )
Is leaving ( Never a thought of ourselves )
Home ( We struggled hard all our lives to get by )
She's leaving home after living alone for so many years.

Friday morning at nine o'clock she is far away.
Waiting to keep the appointment she made,
Meeting a man from the motor trade.

She ( What did we do that was wrong )
Is having ( We didn't know it was wrong )
Fun ( Fun is the one thing that money can't buy )
Something inside that was always denied for so many years.
She's leaving home, bye, bye.

This from the song, "It ain't easy being me" by Chris Knight;

quote:
Why do I do the things I do
Was I born this way am I am a self made fool
I shoot the lights and curse the dark
I need your love but I break your heart
And I know the words that'll bring you back
But I don't say nothing as I watch you pack
I had to work to be the jerk I've come to be

There was an early Jimmy Buffett song called Ringling, Ringling. It was about a little Florida town on a defunct railroad line that was slowly dying away. There was a line "Across from the bar there's a pile of beer cans, been there 27 years. Imagine all the heartaches and tears in 27 years of beer."

Hey RickR, I remember "Ringling, Ringling".
And especially that classic line about the pile of beer cans.

Some of our best song writers always seem to have little gems stuck in among the songlists. It seems these 'unknown songs'
is what keeps me coming back, and interested in, any given artist.

You raise up your head
And you ask, "Is this where it is?"
And somebody points to you and says
"It's his"
And you say, "What's mine?"
And somebody else says, "Where what is?"
And you say, "Oh my God
Am I here all alone?"

‘Something is happening here,And you don’t know what it is, Do you, Mister Jones?'

Yeah, sometimes the hook is worth it.

Here's my favorite ending line from Bob:

"The Moral of This Story., The Moral of This Song;

Is simply "One should never Be, where One does Not Belong".

When you see your Neigbor Struggling, Help him with his load;

And don't go mistaking Paradise, for the Home across the road."

Probably among the best.

I don't know why I ommitted Old Bob..

There's just something about train songs, and for beautiful imagery throughout the song, I really like "City Of New Orleans", by Steve Goodman. (Guthrie's version is my favorite.)

...Fifteen cars, and fifteen restless riders, three conductors, twenty-five sacks of mail.

...Passing trains that have no names, freight-yards full of old black men, and the graveyards of the rusty automobile.

...Oh, the sons of pullman porters, and the sons of engineers, ride their father's magic carpet made of steel...

...And the steel rails still ain't heard the news. The conductor sings his song again, the passengers will please refrain...this train's got the disappearing railroad blues.

It's got poetry, commentary, history, geography, beauty, and sadness...all in the same song. If I could'a written just one hit song, I'd choose that one.
