I had such success with the sad songs I'm going to throw out another one.

Since I play happy hours I like to thrown in my share of drinkin' tunes like Jim, Jack, and Rose, Wine Me Up, etc. Again, as much as I like them I want to stay away from the ultra standards like Whiskey River or The Bottle Let Me Down so let's see what y'all can come up with. Here are some off the top of my head.

Wine Friend of Mine (Stand By Me) - Johnny Bush
I Turn To The Wine - Johnny Bush
A Long Line of Empties - Darrell McCall
It's The Water - Darrell McCall
I Threw Away The Rose - Merle Haggard
Who'll Buy The Wine - Charlie Walker
Sittin' and Thinking - Ray Price
Tore Up - Blues Standard

Keep 'em Coming

I love "The whiskey makes you sweeter than you are" from Laura Cantrell' first album. I guess there aren't too many drinking songs sung by women...?

"Drink up and Be Somebody" - early Haggard
"I gotta Get Drunk" - Willie

There are so many of them that this could go on forever.

Like cheating songs - quite a few years ago my brother and a freind and I started singing cheating somgs one night, to see how many we could come up with. We were well into the second bottle of Scotch before we ran out (speaking of drinking).

Another related question would be how many somgs are there which rhyme "drinking" with "thinking".

..Why Don't We Get Drunk and Scr@w..

..Theres a song that John Widgren's band Western Caravan does called "Voyage to the Bottom of the Bottle" that I like a lot...'I ain't sittin' at this bar to rest my feet'..

..that real pretty Patty Loveless tune "Here I Am"...'and you know that you're gonna find me, if you keep on drinkin' fast, 'cause Honey I'm right there waitin' for you at the bottom of your glass'..

...and the perfect drinking song, George Jone's "Choices"..

I've always liked "Red,red wine" the Neil Diamond song. I don't know if anyone has a country version, but I still think it fits in the heartbreakin' drinking venue.

There is a tune called "The Last Will and Testament of a Drinking Man" that I used to hear on the radio years ago, but I don't know who sang it. Other classics:
Barstool Mountain: Moe Bandy
Bottle, Oh Bottle: Johnny Bush (one of the most graphic "drinking songs" ever IMHO )
Don't Tell Mama I was Drinking: ? ( the guy who did "Smoke Rings in the Dark" )
Hose Cuervo: Shelly West
Tequila: ? ( The Wes Montgomery version is my favorite )
It Won't Hurt: Dwight Yokum

This is a little known tune that I play often. Each time I play this song at a new club I am overwhelmed by people asking about it. It is a great song.

"She´s Looking Better By The Minute" (practically the same thing - I have a version by ET)
and did anyone yet mention "Up Against The Wall Redneck Mother"?

Can't believe no one mentioned these George Jones songs:
If Drinkin' Don't Kill Me (Her Memory Will)
The King is Gone (So Are You)

Then there's:
Crash on the Highway (Roy Acuff)
Whisky and Wimmen (John Lee Hooker)

Don't know if you want to get over into Bluegrass, but there are plenty there.

There's a song by a band from Austin called The Meat Purveyors called "Tallboy" which is really funny... and really good stuff, another one called "Morning After" which is a sort-of drinking song (a waking-up-in-jail-hungover-recalling-last-night song to be exact) both on their album "More Songs About Buildings and Cows" available from Bloodshot... I really like both of those. A bit more in the bluegrass direction, but not a whole lot of folks will have heard those.
