A message was posted on the Fan Forum at http://www.jim-reeves/com that Country Singer Wilma Burgess, famous for the hits "Baby" and "Misty Blue," passed away at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville this morning after suffering a massive Heart Attack. She was 64.

According to the webmisstress, Julie Jordan, Wilma had been hospitalized for tests for the past week, and seemed to be on the road to recovery.

Wilma came to Nashville in 1965, and was signed to Decca by Owen Bradley. She purchased Patsy Cline's "Dream Home" in Goodlettsville from Patsy's widower, Charlie Dick. She later sold it due to financial considerations. She was close friends with Mary Reeves, and worked for a time at the Jim Reeves Museum.

Some of Wilma's personal affects and memorabilia were stored in a warehouse owned by Mary Reeves. Even though there were assurances she would be able to retrieve them, they were lost in events connected to the legal fight concerning the Jim Reeves estate. It is said that Wilma was able to retain a car that was once owned by Patsy Cline.

Wilma ran out of gas in front of my house about 12 years ago. She came in to use the phone, and I had Bob Wills playing on the record player. She said " you sure know good music!" She said "you probably never heard of me, my name is Wilma Burgess. I said "sure I know who you are, I play for Jimmy C. Newman!
We had coffee 'till her ride came. Sorry to hear the news about her.

I'm really sorry to hear that. Wilma had one of the most beautiful voices in country music...ever! It had an almost "operatic" quality, and I'd rank her right up there with Patsy Cline. Her song "Turn Around Teardrops", (which was on the flip side of her hit "Don't Touch Me") is a great song with some wonderful steel work by Weldon Myrick.

Wilma also did some great duets with Bud Logan. Their wide-spread harmony was almost "angelic" at times! They also had a great steel player on their recordings.
I feel fortunate to have never gotten into a poker game against her.Corky Tittle would no doubt agree with me.

I also worked with Wilma Burgess way back when, along with Ray Emmett. I'm sorry to hear of her passing! “Big John” Bechtel, Nashville.

I really don't know who had the bigger hit recording of "Don't Touch Me"..but I seem to remember that on the country station in Baltimore, it was Wilma Burgess's recording that was played. She did have a good voice. It's ironic that just a few days ago I was reading an earlier posting where someone had asked about her!
