A friend and I are playing to an elementary school group and I would like to introduce the steel with some sound that the kids might relate to. I've seen the SpongeBob show but not enough to pick up on a specific, recognizable, short "tune" or "lick". I'm hoping one of you regular viewers (or Brandin?) might have an appropriate idea that might work? Thanks.

Play the theme song! "Are you ready kids? ... I can't hear you! ... Whoooooooo...". They love it!

Hint - don't forget the little tag at the end, where SB plays his nose like a flute. It's the signature!

Just doing octave glisses on sixth chords will be recognizable. Any Hawaiian licks work, too. The main thing is to do big slides, though.

Forumite Gary Brandin can help you w/ that. He's the "main man" that does ALL the work on "S.B.S.P."

The Teletubbies and Sesamie Street themes won't go unnoticed.

Thanks fellas!
I did indeed find the theme song on a SpongeBob site. I'll work on it and I'll throw in a 6th neck gliss or two. If I have time I'll look up Teletubbies too.
That along with the sound of Wylie Coyote using an Acme Co. Rubber Band ought to do it! :-)

Teletubbies is a show for toddlers. Kids in school don't like it anymore.

Dear Smiley,

I know for a fact that California non-pedal steeler Jeremy Wakefield did some playing for Spongebob.

I watch it all the time ... little kids in the house (1 yr, 3 yrs, 44 yrs ...soon to be 45 )ya know ...

Besides Gary Brandin and the Blue Hawaiians and Jeremy W. .... they splice in alot of old Hawaiian recordings also ... I've heard Sol Hoopii and Rudy Wairata quite a few times.

Junior Brown "guest starred" in one episode too.
