I just picked up a couple of Deryl Dodd cd's and really liked him. Robby Turner was playing on one of them. Nice Steel work on both cd's.

I'll add this about Deryl Dodd: We've worked several shows with Deryl and I've met very few bandleaders that are as down-to earth and friendly. The same goes for his band. Great bunch of guys. Deryl writes great songs to. One of my favorites is his song about "New Tony Lama's". If you've heard it, you know what I'm talking about...

Deryl doesn't have a steel guitarist in his band. However, his lead guitarist, Steve "covers all the bases" and then some. Steve's the sole lead instrument and I've never seen him play redundantly. Very creative, too. Think of Danny Gatton.... Go see them when ever you can.

Keep on pickin'!

Kind of peculiar.
I thought Daryl was a steel player himself, yet he chooses not to use any steel in his shows?
His choice of course.

David,

I didn't know Deryl was a steel picker but, I did some checkin' and yes, he did start playing steel at age 16. Next time I see him I'll ask him 'bout his playing and his guitar. As for steel pickers at his shows. Steel players are usually an extra piece and not the "core" of a band. As many of you know, Deryl was out of the music scene for quite awhile due to health problems. When he returned, he pretty much had to start all over. That probably meant starting with a nucleus kind of band (don't quote me, I'm only guessing on his reason). That nucleus includes drums, bass guitar, lead guitar and Deryl on rhthym guitar. However, as I said before, and I mean this as a steel picker, Deryl's lead guitarist is a monster. The guy can play like very few others. And he ain't a "Brent Mason" copy-cat. He's an original. The steel guitar parts are replaced very well and would only be missed by us hardcore steel fanatics (if then). Give Deryl credit for doing things the right way for the future of his band. Go see Deryl Dodd. He and his band are great enterainers and true to the traditions of country music.

Nice links, was sorry to read about his illness. I'm glad he is ok. He is an excellent songwriter. I have noticed that a lot of artist have steels on their albums but maybe not in live shows.

I shared a stage with him in Vegas during the NFR when he had the song "That's how I got to Memphis" on the charts.
He had a steel player with him then. The one thing that I thought was great about him is that during a sound check the lead guitar player wasn't there. So Deryl went and played the guitar players rig for the sound check and played better than about 95% of the lead pickers out there.
