Author | Topic: Gretsch Country Gent decaying binding problem |
Lefty Member From: Grayson, Ga. |
![]() I have a 1970 Gretsch Country Gentleman. The guitar is in perfect shape, but the binding is starting to crack, and getting worst everyday. Has anyone experienced this problem, and had their guitar rebound? (I sure there is someone out there). I would appreciated references to a good repair person. Mine is good, but does not want to tacle it right now. Thanks, Lefty Dekley D-10 Sho-Bud LDG Gretsch Country Gentleman |

![]() Your binding is made of celluloid. Same stuff explosives and even old 35mm film is made of. Over a period of time it starts to break down and either just cracks off or turns to goo. The entire guitar needs to be redone and not just the bad areas now. Eventually all the binding will go bad. I would search out a guitar builder to do the repair. Builders are installing bindings all the time and have a better handle on it than repair guys who might do a binding job every so often. It is going to be expensive!! I would say $2-400 for the entire guitar including touching up some finish spots. It's worth it. |

![]() Bill's right. That's a very common problem among vintage Gretsches. Go ahead the get the whole guitar rebound. Good luck! Rick |
