I was given a signed photo of ET and the Troubadours from about 1966. I can't make out all the signatures. I was wondering if anybody knows who all played with him in that timeframe. I know it is authentic because it is from a relative. They went to see ET. He did a show at a theatre right before they showed the movie "Nashville Rebel" with Waylon Jennings. I think that movie was release about 1966. What are the chances Billy Byrd was with him then? I thought Mr. Byrd had left the band by then, but I read were he joined them again once in the 50's and again in the 60's. One of the signatures sure looks like it says Billy Byrd. |

Texas Troubadours 1966 Leon Rhodes-Lead Guitar Buddy Charleton-Steel Jack Drake-Bass Jack Greene-Drums Cal Smith-Rhythm Guitar Maybe the best country band ever assembled. P.S. Stephen, Billy Byrd was a Troubadour on three different occasions. 1949-59 then again in 1969-70 after Steve Chapman left, then for a third time in 1973-74. All of this info can be found in Ronnie Pugh's excellent book about ET. [This message was edited by Jason Powers on 23 September 2004 at 09:15 AM.] |

Thanks for the info. Here are the names as I can read them. This may not be from 1966: Billy Parker on acoustic guitar Any ideas on when these guys played for him? |

Your post helped me out. You said that Billy Byrd was with ET in 69-70. That would date my picture to 69 I guesss. It is a picture of ET with all the troubadours around him. The guitarist looks like Steve Chapman, but Billy Byrds signature is on the picture. That had me confused. This could explain it. They must have been using pictures that still had Chapman on it, but billy was the one playing that night. Anyway, it is a cherished piece of history that I will keep for a lifetime. |

Stephen, There is a book out called 'Ernest Tubb : the Texas troubadour', by Ronnie Pugh, that has very detailed info about the band in that time period. Many bookstores as well as local libraries have a copy. ~Russ ( ISBN: 0822318598 ) [This message was edited by Russ Wever on 23 September 2004 at 03:07 PM.] |

Anyone here remember ol' "Butterball" Paige...who played for Tubb before Bill Byrd did? |

Okay, so about 1967 Jack Greene, Jack Drake, Cal Smith Buddy Charleton, and Steve Chapman (lead guitar) were the Troubadors, then Jack Green left the Troubadors and joined the Opry as a solo artist that same year. I dunno who replaced him on the drum stool through this period. Billy Parker (ex-Sims recording artist, a deejay on KFMJ in Tulsa (1959), Wichita's KFDI and Oklahoma City's KLPR. In 1968, he went on the road fronting Tubb's Texas Troubadours for three years, he of course replaced Cal Smith who like Greene had gone solo, both had their own road bands in 1969, if not earlier. As mentioned guitarist Billy Byrd briefly rejoined the Texas Troubadours in '69, after almost a decade’s absence. And yeah, he left once again in 1970 and rejoined a few years later. Stephen, I think the signatures are from 1969 or so, the album would be a 1967 pic, but possibly from 1966 as I'm sure the film was made that year then released in the following. Leon Rhodes last sessions as a Troub was in August of '66, so Chapman most likely joined in 1966, I'm not sure if there were any guitarists in the group between Chapman and Rhodes. And yes to the other Jason, the 1966 line-up is definately one of the greatest country bands, and a top flight band in any genre I guess. |

Jason I am not sure what the year was but it was between late 68 and mid 70 I think a drummer that was working for me here in Colorado Springs left to go work for Tubb. His name was Dick Steele. I think that he lives in Denver now but maybe not. Dick came back to work for me in the mid 80's for a few months and that was the last time I saw him. Upon reflection I have changed the time frame to be what I think is more accurate. George [This message was edited by George Duncan Sypert on 26 September 2004 at 12:03 PM.] |

Donny, These were the real old days for ET! Butterball actually started playing bass with ET, that was when the Short Brothers (Jimmie and Leon) alternated on lead and rhythm guitar. On those very early ET tracks, he didn't use steel! Then, starting in 1945, Ray "Kemo" Head was the first steel player, followed by Wayne Fleming and then...you can hear Jerry Byrd on the records. "Seaman's Blues" from Dec. 47 is a classic with JB on steel and Butterball on Lead Guitar! Kind Regards, Walter www.lloydgreentribute.com ------------------ |

Bun Wilson might have replaced Jack on drums. I don't have my book handy but I think that's who it was. ------------------ |

Hi George, yes you had metioned your drummer leaving for Tubb in that time period, we discussed a few years ago now, man does time fly. I don't recall a Dick Steele showing on any session dates, so I wasn't able to pin it down, not everyone ended up on the recordings I suppose. |

Hi Jason, I don't think Dick Steele every recorded with Tubb. At least not to my knowledge. I am not sure how long he played on the road with him or who he went with after that gig. There was also a drummer from one of the road bands that used to play the Navajo Hogan that also went to work with Tubb but I don't recall his name at the moment. It will probably come to me later.
