I recently purchased Junior Brown's new album, "Down Home Chrome". WHAT A REFRESHING AND ENERGETIC SOUND THIS MAN HAS PRODUCED! He sells copies online at his store, www.juniorbrown.com, but I bought my copy at the local Wal-Mart. Junior came into my life in 1993, when I was thirteen. He played a gig on Austin City Limits that hooked me for life! Furthermore, Junior helped me to educate my fellow classmates on what a steel guitar sounds like. Searching for something new yet traditional? Give Ol' Junior a try! THANKS!

Yours truly,

this would be a good post over on the "No Peddlers" section of the website.

Thanx for the heads-up Tay. Junior's stuff is on the top of my CD pile! I do not know of anyone that plays with more energy than Crazy Jr. Brown. [Actually, I think he's only semi-crazy].

I got it ( like all of his previous records!) - he is top notch and certainly like nobody else!

His "Two Rons Don't Make It Right" (Ernest Tubb style!) really made me smile!

Kind Regards, Walter

Hi Tay -

Long time no see. Ha Ha I was gonna post something about this too but you beat me to it. I got my copy last night - it's on sale at Border's - and you are right, it is a treat. His lyrics are as clever as his guitar/steel playing.

Dan, Jr plays a ton of pedal steel on this CD. I think it would also fit well in the steel players section of the website.

I agree, it's another good album from Junior.
What impresses me the most is....it was recorded direct to disk in THREE DAYS!!!!

It doesn't say if there were any overdubs...

Very interesting liner notes-they list all of the mics and pre's and even which mics were used on what instruments.

No tricks here-just good musicians playing good music.

Um...actually, ole Jr. does have some tricks. He gets pedal sounds on his git-steel with all sorts of slants, behind the bar string pulls, behind the nut string pulls, behind the bridge string pulls, twisting tuning keys mid-note, etc. There is nothing like seeing him do all this live. He has a special hole where he throws his bar when he goes to round neck, and he can pull the bar out of there and start using it in a flash when he goes to his C6 square neck. His sound is so energetic live, and the acrobatics so entertaining that I have always been a little dissapointed in his CDs. For one thing, the CDs sound like a 4 or 5 man band playing pretty good; whereas, live you see it's all being done by a drummer with a snare, brushes and one cymbal, a rythmn guitar player, and Jr. doing all the rest single-handed (or rather double-fisted). It's an amazing show that justcan't be captured on CD - maybe he needs a DVD.

I appreciate the enthusiasm on this post! Ol' Junior passes through Memphis about once a year and I always catch his show. He plays down on world-renowned Beale Street, known internationally as the "Home of the Blues". He had an entourage of friends that drove up to Memphis from various parts of Texas to catch his show at B.B. King's Blues Club last year. It would be a real treat to have him at one of the steel conventions sometime. Can someone try to arrange that?

Junior knows a few tricks all right...
he plays "Almost to Tulsa" on his guit-steel and it is something to behold.

He makes no secret that he plays pedal steel on his albums however. I think he has played standard E9 on every one of his CDs.

He has talked about making a pedal guit-steel before. I wonder if he's gotten anywhere with that...?
