I cannot figure out who used to play steel guitar for Porter Waggoner or for Charley Pride. Also, where might I find a CD of Porter Waggoner with the songs "Cold Hard Facts of Life" and "You Were the Last Thing on My Mind"? PLEASE RESPOND! ANYBODY? Thanks, |

Tay, Go to this link and click on "Real Country Archives Page 2" for "Cold Hard Facts". I believe the steel player was Don Warden. I believe some of the songs recorded in the early sixties had Buddy Charleton playing on them. Respectfully, |

Hi Tay, That's a lot of questions at one time - here is some general info: On the very early Porter Wagoner records you can hear Claude Jackson, Don Davis and Doc Martin, then Don Warden came in who was with the Wagonmasters for years, also Jimmy Day played on a few (I've Enjoyed As Much Of This As I Can Stand" is one of my favorites!). The later Porter Wagoner recordings for RCA in the 70's have mostly Pete Drake playing. For Charley Pride: From the beginning of his career to the mid 70's it is mostly Lloyd Green playing. Lloyd played on all of Charley's #1 hits from that era with the exception of "Kiss An Angel Good Morning" which was played by Gene O'Neal (who was also Charley's road player for a long time). Lloyd Green also did the famous "Panther Hall Album" with Charley, still one of the best live albums ever recorded! Kind Regards, Walter www.lloydgreentribute.com ------------------ |

A lot of steel licks on Porter Wagoner's records was in fact, Buck Trent. He played an electric banjo with scruggs tuners and palm peddles. He sounded like a funky telecaster doing Mooney inspired steel licks,(at least to my ears!) |

Not sure about the recordings, but in 73 or 74 I believe, I played at the Blackboard in Bakersfield on mondays. When Charley Pride was in town, Gene ONeal (sp?) would sit in with us. I was very impressed with his playing. On the road with Charley Pride he was held back a lot, so when he sat in he would really let go. Sounded great, and we had some fun after the gig. |

Does any one know the first name of Gene O Neals son who played bass? We worked the road together (sheesh) i can't even reacll at the time who we were playing for. I think the last time we worked together was in Iowa City,Iowa.I want to say his first name was Doug,but not sure.Yes Gene was a great player and friend.Tracy |

I have been recording the Porter Wagoner shows on the RFD-TV channel on the DISH satellite, and Don Warden is seen playing on the shows. Also, don't forget that Joe Wright played for Charley Pride for 9 years on the road. Dennis ------------------ |
