I recently acquired the DVD with Buddy Emmons and Hal Rugg at "The Bell Cove" and I have
a question that I sure hope someone can answer for me.The bass player on there was
named David Smith and I was wondering if anyone knew him, or had any background information about him?
I once had a bass player named Dave Smith in my band years ago, and the one in the
video bears a remarkable resemblance to him. I believe that it's very possible they are be related.
He appears to be about the right age to be his son. I would really like to make contact
with him. If it's at all possible for anyone to provide his email address or something, I would
be most grateful. You are certainly welcome to foreword this email to him or send him
my email address if you know how to contact him.
The Dave Smith that played bass in my band around the L.A. Ca. area in 1960-61
had just come off the road with the Champs ("Tequila") during the exact same period
of time that Glen Campbell was playing
guitar with that group.
Any information you could provide, even if it was just
a contact for anyone else that might possibly know him,
would be tremendously appreciated.

I thank you most sincerely. Kenny Dyer .....Long time picker.

Ken,

I don't know if he is related to the David Smith you mentioned, but this guy is one hell of a bass player, no matter if you are talking about Country or Jazz. He played several conventions in St. Louis, also he can be heard on most of the Emmons/Pennington recordings for Step One (with the Swing Shift Band), also he is on the newest Doug Jernigan album "Speed Pickin' and Country Ballads" - great musician!

Kind Regards, Walter

Walter,

Thanks for the reply. The bass player I knew always went by Dave, but not only
does the bass player in question here look so very much like him, believe it or not, he even plays just like he did. Dave, likewise, could play it all from country to jazz.
It is really uncanny. I will keep researching until I find someone that knows how to get in touch with him, my curiosity
is over whelming.
Thank you again ever so much.
My best, Kenny ......

David Smith played bass at Jeff Newman's jams when I was enrolled in his classes in Nashville, probably in the 80's. He was a young guy then, maybe 25. If Jeff were still alive, he could probably fill you in. You might try Fran and see if she wuld have any memory of him or any leads.

I would think Buddy Emmons could give you some info on David. He has played music for several years with Emmons. David is definitely a fantastic bass player.

And I wonder what he ever did with the Marlen S10 I sold him many years ago? I also would like to hear from him. He use to work some with Ray Kirkland. Thanks

Although there's no official listing for Dave Smith as a Champ, the timeline you mention is spot on.
--------------
The Dave Smith that played bass in my band around the L.A. Ca. area in 1960-61
had just come off the road with the Champs ("Tequila") during the exact same period
of time that Glen Campbell was playing
guitar with that group.
--------------
Bob Morris was officially the bassist at that point, however I assume he might have had to bail on a tour due to studio gigs or something like that.
Campbell did have a sort of Champs type band with a couple of ex-Champs, a kind of cash-in group, one he never refers to, but did mention offhand in his horrid 1970 biography.
Smith might have played in that band, but the scenario of temping for Morris is quite probable.

Sorry I don't have any practical info on the bassist Dave Smith, I'll look through my notes and see if I can find a mention of him elsewhere.

David Smith lives in Dickson, Tn., which is off I-40 west of Nashville...(or he did)
I was told he came to Nashville as a steel player, but now is known for his bass playing skill. Worked lots of sessions with 'Big E'...one of the premier players around...
If he worked with you in the 50's / 60's time frame, he must have been very young...I would guess him to be in his late 30's, or early 40's now...???????
You should be able to get a line on him from the Musicians Union in Nashville...
Hope this helps, even tho it is scant info...

RP...'come on in'

Rob,

Thank you very much.
Yeah, I knew it wasn't him because of the age difference, but as I mentioned in my original post, the resemblance is so close
that I would be more than surprised if he wasn't the son.
