I was sitting around yesterday thinking about some of my favorite country tunes from the past, with the idea of getting back into playing classic country again. You know, the stuff that just has "good time" written all over it. I'd almost forgotten how much I love stuff like "14 Carat Mind", "Walk On By", "San Antonio Rose", "Under Your Spell Again", "I Ain't Never", "Crazy Arms", "Nothing Sure Looked Good On You", etc. What are your choices for favorite classic country crowd pleasers? |

Oh YEAH! All great selections! You are helping me to clean out the cobwebs, for sure. So many great songs---PLEASE, keep 'em coming. I'm finding that within these records, I am also getting a pretty nice overview of steel styles over the years. Lots of great licks to learn too! |

Billy Walker - "Circumstances" Connie Smith - "Cry Cry Cry" (both tunes that could be done in steel, wonder if they ever have been?) Les Anderson -> Thanks for the info on Misty Blue by Wilma Burges. I've been looking for that tune version (& singer) for a couple of years now, never could find out who sang it. Billy Jo Spears' version is OK, but I like Wilma's rendition better. After reading the song lists that have been posted in this thread I have come to a very firm conclusion! Steel guitar players are a bunch of softies and tend to tune their ears to the slower and more emotional songs. Geez, no wonder we play steel guitars. ------------------ |

I LOVE Almost Persuaded! What a perfect country song. I'm also a fan of "Tips of My Fingers" There are so many great old tunes. I have a hunch that people are gonna get into them again, as there are a lot of folks who feel like modern country gave them the shaft. Maybe its time for the "Steel Guitar Army" to bring the great stuff back to the people who have missed it all these years? |

I am not sure if the modern country music could even be classed as country music. It's more to the leading edge of Suburban Rock. My wife and I went to a so called new age country show this past weekend and listened to two bands that were all young people and there was more head banging thump, thump than there was anything that resembled a good country sound. In fact about the only thing country about both bands was a couple of the guys were wearing black western hats: pulled down over their eyes so you could barely see their faces. In both bands, most of the musicians were dressed in tee shirts and jeans or the old fashion undershirts. Neither of the bands had a steel guitar or a fiddle. One of the bass players had his bass hanging down around his hips, if not lower. There was lots of warped and screaming guitar and much, much too much bass and drums. The bands names however sort of gave an indication of their music style. “Rocken Country” & “Country in the City” During the both shows, I wondered very seriously if any of these kids had any idea who Faron Young is or possibly Ray Price. Les--You are right. These kids probably haven't heard the artists you mention. Ah, but that is something that can work favorably, because what was old can now be "new" again. There is nothing more fun to me than hearing a good country band that pays the classics. It creates a great atmosphere in any club. Its hard not to have a good time when that music gets going--in a similar fashion to a good blues band that has the groove going. Its just uplifting rather than depressing. There's always gonna be somebody trying to turn country into rock or bluegrass in to new age acoustic--whatever. I have an open mind and I like anything that sounds good to me. I guess I just believe that traditional music has value in a timeless way and should be played too. People liked classic country back when because it was good. It still is! I love all the new favorites listed too. There are a few I haven't heard, so I am trying to dig up some of this stuff to hear. |

That is a good one ! we have lost our number one fiddle , to a hearing loss , but I have been trying to get her to teach me her intro - so I can kick it with the steel - what she would do is , at the end of something like " Faded Love " she would kick "Louisiana Man" with a get down fiddle and that cagen sound . I'm just a youngster, but you can throw in just about any of Buck Owens songs...come on be honest...how many people here haven't played Tom Brumley's lick from together again? But speaking of what's old is new again, Daryl Singeltary's CD, That's why I sing this way...It is fantastic. Remakes of old classics and some new twists on other ones. My favorite is I never go around mirrors! |

My favorite is "When love Was Green", off of an Album called "George Jones sings songs of Dallas Frazier". It's an awesome album! |
