![]() They are recommended for anyone getting into early western swing. I listened to them on the net and I really liked them but the only thing available is a big box set from Bear Records. Does anyone know of any other cd's available? |

![]() Wayne, I have a 4 CD set of Milton Brown & His Musical Brownies (w/Bob Dunn) called "The Daddy Of Western Swing". I think this one is still available at Amazon (Properbox 59). Kind Regards, Walter www.lloydgreentribute.com ------------------ |

![]() Wayne I was snooping around on the internet and found the following article on Milton Brown. I had at one time the box set from Texas Rose Records or something like that that was mentioned in the article. I lost them in a house fire recently. The article is a good one however. I had the pleasure of playing with Ocie Stockard at a club in Artesia, NM before he died. He was a killer and could drink 4 or 5 good beer guzzlers under the table. Here's the site about Brown and Bob Dunn: phred ------------------ |

![]() Wayne: As far as I know, the Bear Family box is the only Cliff Bruner collection currently available. However, Bruner is well represented on a number of western swing anthologies, including the two very reasonably priced Proper boxed sets, the Charly "Jive and Smile" collection, etc. As for Milton Brown, the Proper set that Walter mentioned is very good. If the Texas Rose anthology is still available, it's quite a bit more expensive, but more complete and better remastered, and has excellent liner notes. Fred: Meeting and playing with Ocie Stockard - man, how I envy you! Have you read the Milton Brown biography? Wonderful book. |

![]() Ian, I was raised in the same area of Texas the Browns came from. I was only 3 years old when Milton was killed, but my Dad used to take me to the Derwood Brown dances with my Mom. In those days the kids were bedded down on pallets around the outside of the dance hall--no such thing as baby sitters. Ocie Stockard not only played banjo with the band, but he was one hell of a fiddle player, and that's what he was playing in NM in the early 50's. I was playing drums with the Jimmy Blakely band out of Roswell, NM. Jimmy and Dorothy had several well known players go through that band, such as Tag Lambert, Lee Bell, Red Pope, George Clayburn who played later with Wills, Bruner, etc. phred ------------------ |
