Jim I hope I can help you out a little.
"The Whites" consists of Buck White and his
3 daughters. One of the daughters is the
wife of Ricky Shaggs. I don't know if they
are related to Tommy or not.

Right, it just didn't hit me when I first read the post. I'm a little "out of the loop" these days...

Tommy White is the son of Buck White. He used to play full time with the family before taking the staff steel player job for the Opry.

I never made the connection between our own Tommy White and The Whites. I've loved the music of Buck and the girls for a long time.

Thanks for the info.!

Before Tommy White jioned "The Whites" they had a dobro player in the band for quite a few years. I think his name was Jerry Douglas.

Jim, to miss out on knowing "The Whites" would have had to been "out of the loop" during the '70s and '80s. That's when they had most of their hits, and when Jerry Douglas got most of his early studio experience. The Whites started out as "Buck White and the Down Home Folks" in the early '70s, but started going by "The Whites" when they started singing back up on Emmylou albums in the late '70s.

In the '70's I was playing 5-6 nights a week all over the country, in the '80's 5-6 nights a week in Las Vegas except for some years I quit and did a regular job, coincidentally the same area you're in, isn't it, Alvin?

... and even though I went to Nashville several times, I'm not now and never have been a "fan", or keep up on who's who. I just really am not that interested. I've heard plenty of Emmy Lou songs and played them in a lot of bands. I love Emmy Lou, Albert Lee, Lloyd Green, but I don't know or particularly care who sang backup on them. I don't follow dobro players much either, though I like the instrument. I don't know who played everything on every record and I don't care to.

Sorry Jim,

My post was no way meant to offend you or any one, I was in no was trying to be negative at all.
I thought that I was just pointing out that "The Whites" have been around for a long time.

If I have upset you in any way I deeply and honestly apologize.

OK Alvin, I apologize to you too, and if I offended you sometime in the past (and I certainly may have, I've been known to be pretty blunt) I apologize for that and if you need to get anything off your chest, just email me and we'll work it out. Otherwise, no problem here.

Paul K, you can go to Tommy's web site and click on photos and you'll see a picture of Tommy and his dad.

I do not remember who told me Tommy White was related to Buck and the girls. Obviously I was misinformed. At any rate Tommy is definitely a great picker and a first class guy as well. My apologies for the error.
