Depends on whose. I haven't started practicing yet (optimism, not laziness), but if the day ever comes, it'll be "Streets of Laredo" for my mom...the tune she has always absent-mindedly hummed and sang. Probably "Wabash Cannonball" for dad. (Count me in for that, too, while I'm thinking of it. Play Dizzy Dean's version off the old 78.)

I played at a fellow steel player's funeral two years ago. I played "Softly and Tenderly (Jesus is Calling)" and "Precious Memories".

Since then, I have played at 2 more funerals, and at those I played "Softly and Tenderly", "Precious Memories" and "Farther Along".

I had a girl tell me she wanted me to play Farewell Party at her funeral. This was at a club and she said her funeral would be her Farewell Party. This is as close as I have come to be asked to play at a funeral. I vote for Amazing Grace or How Great Thou Art for the simple reason that the audience will be familar with the tunes and they are both nice, slow, and appropriate tunes. John Hughey has tracks for both of them on his "He touched Me" CD.

I didn't play it, but my mom had all the songs picked out for her funeral and the one I especially remember is "I'll Fly Away". That was her prayer that upon death she would fly away to be in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

I've been asked by some family members, and friends to sing "Why Me" at their funerals. It will be very hard for me to do, but I'll do it.

(Beyond the sunset) used to be played at funerals, seems appropriate even today.

I did Sinatra's "I did it my way" at a Catholic funeral. The Widow requested it. Why? it's a l-o-n-g story, but it was appropriate.

My friend Anne attended a funeral for a friend of hers who dies of HIV. They played "I fall to pieces" and the pallbearers were all women dressed in high heels and black dresses.

Especially poignant for my daddy’s funeral was “Take my Hand Precious Lord”. It was perfect!

Blue In Green
What A Wonderful World
Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Let It Be
On Eagle's Wings

I occasionally get the "solo guitar" call for a funeral, ick, I hate doing them. But they pay well, and I have my folder now with the tunes above in it. Sometimes the family will request a particualr tune, I usually deliver.

I did play a funeral in March 2004 and was asked to play an instrumental and I was allowed to play the song I wanted to play. I chose a Rusty Goodman song "Look For Me, For I Will Be There Too". A good friend and an elder in the church I served with has passed on, and the song just had a special meaning to me with his departure.
