Just enjoyed a great show by Marty and his Fabulous Superlatives band (including the great Kenny Vaughn on lead, and Harry Stinson on drums) at El Camino College in Gardena, CA last night. Marty is so great live, if he's playing near you, GO SEE HIM! He's the real mccoy for all us country music lovers. No pedal steel in his road band, but I'm going to send him a resumé, tell him to create a job for me. Ha!

I bought "Soul's Chapel" a few weeks back. One of the top 5 albums of the year, gospel or not, IMO.

No steel on it-but no big deal.

I love the understated arrangements and playing. Excellent vocals. Kind of a mixture of Staples Singers, Booker T. and the MG's, and rockabilly.

Great stuff!

Met and got to know Marty Stuart a little, back in '79 when he was playing guitar for Vassar Clements. He was quiet, shy, well-mannered. Not your typical loudmouth cocky musician. If I'd had any idea he would go on to become one of the biggest men in Nashville, maybe I shoulda stayed in touch.... woulda, coulda, shoulda.

I hope he comes to Edmonton. He and his band are the real deal in a world of pro-tooled phonies.

We opened for them this year. Out of all the people we've opened for that was number one for me. Marty Stuart is becoming a legend in country music. The band is incedible for four guys. Outstanding sining and playing. Kenny Vaughan is a monster. I had him sign mt Gretsch along with Marty.

Marty is great. His band is killer.

He had a fantastic steeler in his band, Gary Hogue, who died young of a heart attack. I don't think Marty has considered replacing him.

I have to comment on Marty and his Fabulous Superlatives band.My wife & i drove about 250 miles to see them 8 months ago or so.
It was a great show & Marty was super good.
The thing that impressed me the MOST about his was he let each musician in his band step up front to the mic & sing a song-HE backed them up & you could see he was NOT a bit jealous at all doing it.Of course after the show they all hung around & signed autographs & talked to everyone.I told each musician they were very lucky to be working for Marty & they all said he treated them all great.I personally thanked Marty for letting each of his musician's share the spotlight & shine some. This is something i have seen very few " stars " EVER do!!!!!
Go see him if you get the chance-his band is super & Marty is a very good entertainer & musician...Ron

Sorry, but why not, if he's so real?

Mr Cann, please see my post just above- Gary Hogue was a close friend of Marty's and long time band member and died tragically young. Marty has apparently decided to not replace him for whatever reason. It doesn't diminish Marty's talent, or his band's. It somehow does enhance his humanity, IMO. ANd Marty is as country as they come. He's country enough for Connie Smith...

Gary Hogue wasn't just another steel player. He was one of the greatest pickers that has ever put on a set of picks. He was well known in the Dallas area for years. He and Junior Knight have played in bands forever in this area. He was not only a great player, but a great man. I hve never heard anything negative about Gary, only good stuff. Marty thought enough of him to put this link on his web page.

So- is he still using Clarence White's "Frankenstein" (prototype b-bender) in concert?

Thanks for that link, Mark.

Whether or not Marty is carrying a steel player in his touring band, that story pretty much told me what Marty thought of Gary Hogue, and what he thinks about steel guitars and players in general.

After reading that I wouldn't have the cajones to ask Marty why he doesn't have a steel player.

To Dave Van Allen:

Thanks for the heads up. My comment was a bit shallow. Sorry to have given offense.

PS: James, please.

I don't want to burst anyone's bubble, but; unless I'm mistaken, Marty Stuart used Kayton Roberts on the ’OPRY about (2)-weeks ago and I also heard that Kayton is considering doing a little more Public~Playing in the future! {Oopsˇ}
