I saw some footage of some Bob Hope tours with some Hollywood starlets singing for GI’s and their sole accompaniment was a guitarist, playing on a Gibson L-5 or something along that order. I believe the footage was shot in Vietnam late 60s. He was a real chord man and just an all around outstanding player. Do any of the music historians that provide information to this site have any idea who it might have been and if he has any recordings available?

I saw that cut also. I dunno', but he played second best to Ian Ufton of Toronto, Canada.......what a fine rhythm man.

That was probably Tony Romano, he toured with Bob Hope on the USO tours all through 40's to 60's. One of the unsung heroes of jazz guitar, he played with Joe Venuti after Eddie Lang died, that probably tells you what caliber of guitar player we're talking about, a master of acoustic rhythm and chord melody. There is a cd available called "Never Before, Never Again" Venuti/Romano and it has their recorded early duets. Get that and hear how two genius minds work together.

Jussi - I just ordered that Venuti/Romano CD. I'm a big Joe V fan. I just got one with him and one of my favorite guitarits, George Barnes. Recorded in '75. It's superb. Looking frontwards to hearing this one. I've heard of Tony Romano, but don't have him on any recordings that I know of. Thanks for pointing out this record.

Howard, you're gonna like this one, I'm sure. As much as I love Django/Grapelli I prefer this style even more. Tony Romano is just one of the many unknown masters of the "plectrum guitar style", it's somewhat of a lost art. Guys like Romano, Harry Volpe, Frank Victor, Al Valenti and others could sound like an orchestra on their acoustic arch tops. And don't even get me started on George Barnes...
