My wife and I went to see Gary Morris (the singer) at the North Star Casino in Bowler Wi last weekend and this man has vibrato like you hear in a great steelguitar ballad. What a great singer he is.He has used steel in some of his earlier recordings in Nashville but I don't hear any in the latest ones.RS

Ron: That vibrato comes from Gary's operatic background. I believe he did an album way back that showcased his voice in a opera choice of material.

Gary has also done some work on Broadway in the past and I've heard there are more things in the works for him in that venue. One of the greatest singers in any type of music to be sure......JH in Va.

Compared to singers like Gary Morris, John Berry, and Larry Gatlin, most all the other male singers out there are just wannabees. Oh sure, those other singers can claim bigger sales, popularity, and tons of cash, but they know in their hearts they're not in the same league as these 3 guys. (Kinda like most of us would feel around Buddy, Paul, Lloyd, or Tommy White. )

Back in the eighties, Gary had a song out called "100% Chance of Rain". I saw him in concert back in the eighties. Brett, Emmons S-10, Morrell lapsteel, GFI Ultra D-10

When I left Michael Murphey's band around 1979, I started playing with Gary here in Denver, where he was the biggest draw in the local scene at that time. He was a lot of fun, and I ended up playing on his first record for Warner Brothers (along with Sonny Garrish, which was a real honor for me ). When the record hit and the tours were looking longer, I headed back to the studio... He could sure belt it out--his producers at the times called him Conan .

He resides in Colorado again these days, with a great place in Pagosa Springs where he does guided flyfishing and hunting...

Mr. Macy - Since the song was mentioned above, care to share who played steel on Velvet Chains?

Great singer. Some friends of mine from Augusta, GA comprised his touring band in the early 80's.

Yeah, Rick, the Brantley brothers! I remember them from when we were working the Red Lion Pub, and a few other clubs, in Augusta---during my bluegrass phase. BIG surprise when I returned to electric, we opened for Gary Morris, and there was Jamey, burning that Gibson L5-S like no tomorrow.
Good memories.

Gary Morris is a fishing guide now? Wow, excellent! I might have to break out the ol' Orvis and go up there sometime this coming summer.

Steve- yes! And Mike Brigham on drums. I remember seeing all those guys on Hee-Haw with Gary, back in the day.

The Brantleys were great, and also at least in the time I was around, it was Merle Brigante on drums, who played on all those great Loggins and Messina records...

I remember Mike B. telling me that he replaced Merel Bregante. By the way, I recently discovered that Merel lives in Austin now.

He did a great job with Loggins and Messina- along with the Eagles, my favorite 70's band.
