Heard this tune last nite on XM-10, but it was not Gordon Lightfoots version, and there was no steel. I was amazed at the difference. There was really something missing. None of the "visual imagery" that the steel aroused was there. It was flat and monotonic without the "sound of the wind thru the wires". They tried to "simulate" the steel with guitar and organ but it didn't work. At the end the singer calls out a nice tribute of the names of all 29 crewmembers, but it would have been complete with the steel.

That ship went down in Lake Superior and on the anniversary of the wreck, they play that song to death in Minnesnowta.

It's a great song, though, Erv. I never get tired of it.

I used to do it when I played as half of an acoustic duo. We performed a lot in Border's stores and it never failed to draw people from other parts of the store to the coffee shop.

I watched the Edmund Fitzgerald unload a massive load of sulfur one day whilst with my dad at his place of employment on the Buffalo River. It was quite a boat. I'll never forget it. Steve, I've never heard Gordon Lightfoot's version without the steel, it would be interesting to hear and compare (or contrast and compare... as the old prof's used to ask in college exams).

I've heard Gord's version without steel, and to me it didn't sound right.

When I lived in Sault Ste. Marie, I would watch and marvel as the EF passed thru the locks ....

The original is from 1976, on the "Summertime Dream" album. Pee Wee Charles on steel.
There is another thread about this tune, where Pee Wee talks a bit about this session.

This song also gets a lot of play in Rogers City Michigan where a lot of the crew lived.

That's hilarious, John.....and a little creepy. It would make for a great scene in a David Cronenberg movie or something.
