![]() On the radio this mornin' the DJ said it was on this date that Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" LP was released in 1973. It was on Billboard's top 200 LP chart for something like over 20 years. |

![]() That's an all-time classic, I never get tired of it.. What a masterpiece. Steinar ------------------ |

![]() That album is a great example of how steel can be successfully incorporated into music other than country. Actually, I'm enough of steel-a-holic to think... that the album was on the charts for 20 years solely because of the haunting steel sound OK, maybe not. |

![]() Hope you guys don't think I'm an idiot, but how much steel is on that album? Is it all non pedal, or is some of it pedal steel? Who plays it? I haven't listened to that record since...well since after "The Wall" came out, whenever that was...what was that 1979? I guess I didn't have "steel detector ears" back then. It might be good to "rediscover" them for a little steel action. [This message was edited by P Gleespen on 24 March 2006 at 12:42 PM.] |

![]() David Gilmore plays it. I have videos of him playing both lap and pedal guitars. I haven't seen them for a while, but it seems that his pedal guitar was a Fender, but I'm not sure. |

![]() I use that song as an example when I get the deer in the headlights look when I tell rock fans I play steel. That album will probably go down in history as one of the greatest rock projects of all time. |

![]() quote: I picked up David Gilmour's latest effort On an Island. In the booklet, there's a picture of him surrounded by guitars (not a tele in sight, though I know he's played a few) One of the axes looks like a frypan! |

![]() If you're a DSOTM fan, you shouuld check out the DVD of them making the record. It has a lot of studio footage, plus the members of the band today and the engineer (a few years back) talking about making the record. It's been a while since I've seen it, but I think Gilmore even messes around with a steel guitar to show how he played the parts on the record. BTW, there's also a record out there somewhere called "Dub Side of the Moon" which is a reggea dub style cover of the album...very cool. Money.... |

![]() If you liked "Dub Side of The Moon," check out "Rebuild The Wall," by Luther Wright and The Wrongs. It's The Wall done country/bluegrass and features Olesh Maximew on pedal steel. Pretty cool. http://www.lutherwright.com/thewall.php ------------------ |

![]() I could've told you it was 1973! I was teaching guitar in a music store that also sold stereo gear (remember those days?) and "Money" played incessantly. Very creative stuff. [This message was edited by Rick McDuffie on 27 March 2006 at 05:31 AM.] |

![]() Coincidentally there's an interview with David Gilmour in Guitar World magazine. Although I don't have it here right now, he said he used a Fender lap steel, then a Jensen (English made) lap steel with a Fender pickup. He used E minor tuning (bass to treble E B E G B E) for "One of These Days" and a variation on G6 tuning (bass to treble D G D G B E) for other songs. ------------------ |
