Can anyone tell me whether this song pre-dates Asleep at the Wheel? I thought it did, but I can't find any earlier recordings.

Thanks.

It was written by the late Tommy Camfield, who played fiddle for Hank Thompson and many more, but I don't know who all else besides AATW that recorded it.

Here are the liner note from "The Very Best of Asleep At The Wheel";

Track 7-
Miles And Miles Of Texas
In 1974, Tommy Allsup and I went over to Hank Thompson's publishing company to see if they had any old tunes we might want to do! We turned up this gem, "Miles and Miles of Texas," which was a demo from around 1950. It had never been recorded on a record and so we cut it in Houston, TX for our album, Wheelin and Dealin. Since then it has become a Texas standard and a song forever associated with Asleep at the Wheel. A tip of the ale Stetson to Diana Johnston and the late Tommy Camfield for writing this great ode to the Lone Star State!

The only early version I know of is by Jimmy McGraw of the Miller Brothers band, recorded for the Band Box label out of Denver in 1962.
In fact, the Miller Brothers are supposed to be the backing band on McGraw's version.

Bob Browning has that song in his "Country Music and Western Swing" album. I'm not sure when Bob did this - I think about 1980. It had Jeff Newman on steel and Jeff also used the cuts from the album on some of his teaching material.

As a side note on this album, Ernest Tubb wrote the "liner notes" and I was at his house in early 1982 and he was really proud that ET had written the liner notes - maybe more than the new album.

I have it on a late seventies album by Red Steagall ("Texas Red" or "Hang on feeling", can't remember which one) plus at least three or four other versions. But AATW is the best one so far, IMO.

Thanks guys,

sounds like there was the one recording by Jimmy McGraw before AATW, but most interesting is that this was on the back shelf for so long.
