Question 1: It's probably been asked a hunnert times, but, who did the steel?
Question 2: Is the tab for the steel break available anywhere? It's really intriguing. I like how one of the notes gets held constant for so long...

Ray, If you're asking about the Paul Anka song on Heart Like A Wheel, it's Sneaky Pete.

Pete, Don't forget Red Rhodes! He was on there too. I had to pull the album out last night and give it a listen.

Thanks all for the info. Sneaky Pete did a nice job on creating a steel break that is timeless. When I worked as a DJ in a club in the '70's I occasionally played this tune during the wind down of the last 15 minutes of the nite. Appropriate or not? who cared... I just wanted to hear the steel.

Duuuuuuuuuude, just coz an album don't credit no-one, don't mean they didn't play on it.

Actually in all seriousness Red played on two Ronstadt songs that ended up on the Music From Free Creek anthology superjam album. (for want of a better term)
Recorded in '69, the album was issued in two different versions in 1973 and 1976.

I might add that Red and just about everyone else involved failed to be credited for their sterling session playing on Ronstadt's solo debut album in 1969.

Session players included the Forum's own Herb Steiner, Clarence White and one Red Rhodes.

The era of Heart Like a Wheel was when I gained a renewed interest in steel guitar and gave me the impetus to actually buy one and learn how to play it. Lots of great music and I wore the LP out listening to it.

Slightly off topic, I was in the supermarket a while back and Ronstadt's cut of "Willin'" was playing. The steel guitar seemed to fill up the whole store. Was that Pete on that tune or Danny Pendleton?

I have a question. Does L. Rondstadt have a steel on all of her recordings? anyone?

I would imagine there is steel on all the country rock albums, although maybe not on every cut. Probably none on the jazz/pop standards album or the Latino music one.

Those Ronstadt country rock pedal steel parts were what got so many of us baby boomers into playing this confound instrument. B.J. Cole's beautiful playing on Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" also did it for me. Somehow that stuff grabbed us boomers more than the standard Nashville country pedal steel we had been exposed to. It showed us that pedal steel could go way beyond commercial Nashville corny. This is not to belittle Nashville country, because all those steelers got their chops playing commercial country, and their country rock playing was thoroughly imbued with country pedal steel sensibilities. In fact, most of us quickly worked backwards from country rock into the current and prior pure country pedal steel recordings and discovered all the gold there. It's just that we were mostly from the rebellious youth culture of the day that scorned everything commercial, especially commercial Nashville country. Um...maybe times haven't changed that much.

The real question for you, Jody, is whether it was all pedal steel, or whether there was any no-peddler stuff on any of her cuts. That's a good question - I'm thinking no.

Thank you David. I beleive you answered my question

Any kind of steel non pedal or pedal steel. As long as there was either of the above was what my question was. A non pedal steel I beleive could have handled those tunes as well, those on the pop side.Thank you. PS If I were to mention a cd with no steel on the cd would it be appropriate for me to post it on this thread or start a new one, that is basically the question. your reply will be appreciated.

Thanks You have a friend in Pennsylvania

Always thought that was Sneaky Pete on her cut of Willin. Listening now I'm not as sure: still sounds like a fender, but not necessarily Kleinow. Definitely was him on Little Feat's second version (Sailin Shoes).
