I heard The Blue Hawaiians version of the blues song Red Top yesterday ... the musicians all shout "Red Top" at the end of each chorus. The Champs' Tequila and Glenn Miller's Pennsylvania 65000 are two other tunes that come to mind where the band collectively shouts out a title or key word. What would you call these ... "shout chorus" songs? Besides practically every other Bob Wills song, what other songs traditionally feature this "shout chorus"?

"Rag-Mop"

"Minnie The Moocher" (the "Hi-Dee-Ho" song)

"Dance, Dance, Dance!"

"Shout!"

"Y'all Come"

"Shotgun Boogie"

Gosh, there's probably a thousand of these "shoutin' songs"!

I heard Buddy E do "Four or Five Times" or was it Fo Fi Time?
We shouted out and repeated his scat lines. Not sure who originated the tune

I believe that was a Cab Calloway tune. Could be wrong, though; it happened once before.

McKinney's Cotton Pickers, 1928. I'm guessing Calloway was a little later. Anyone know an earlier recording?

In the jazz world, "Shout Chorus" refers to the classic big band dynamic, maybe before the last head, where the saxes and brass are all screamin' together before dropping the dynamic for the last head.

I'm not sure they are what you'd call "shout choruses", but "Bottle Baby Boogie" and "Under the Boardwalk" are similar to that.

The band I play with "Sacred Cowboys" contains two cast members of the HBO series Deadwood and we have a little tune called "Deadwood Ho-Down". There's a call and response point in the tune where,in the spirit of "Ragmop" and "Pennsylvania 65000",the audience is sanctioned to yell out a certain 10 letter word beginning with the letter "C" that appears frequently in the dialog of the show. You'd be amazed at how young and old Deadwoodheads will gleefully curse at the top of their lungs when given such license. -MJ-

As John said, the term "Shout Chorus" is often used in jazz, and it has nothing to do with vocals. It means All soloists playing at the same time. It's usually the last time through the structure, or the next to the last time.

As far as Vocal Shouts, I'm reminded of "Sweet Caroline, good times never seemed so good... SO GOOD! SO GOOD! SO GOOD!" It wasn't recorded that way, but it's sung that way a lot, around here anyway. It's a Red Sox Fenway fan favorite. I've shouted it many times there

Does.....

"Hey! Teacher! leave those kids alone!"

.....count? The song doesn't really have a chorus, but that's a big hook in the tune.
