![]() They couldn't pay me enough Lipton's tea to pay $1,200.00 to be reinstated. Sure "Seems Like Old Times" Though. What else is new. |

![]() I was a local 802 member back in 1978. I quit because I was paying more in union dues than the bread I'd be making from the measly GB gigs that I had to hustle my butt off to get. --------------------------- Emmons LeGrande S10 3+4, Goodrich 120 HP ,Acoustic Image Clarus 1R,Raezers Edge cabinet 1x12 1978 sunburst Gibson L-5s [This message was edited by Mike Shefrin on 31 July 2006 at 06:15 PM.] |

![]() I was member from 1972 to 1976. Got tired of all the racketeering going on. Wasn't worth the dues I paid. The union "reps" always looking for a handout !!!! I made more money being on my own. |

![]() I was a AFM member from 1952 until 1992. Since I chose not to play until late 1998, my dues were still collected. In 1998, I asked about life membership and was told that I did not deserve life membership. Subsequently, I resigned as a member in good standing and I have an AFM letter that states that. In 2005, I called and sent emails to the AFM Local that has jurisdiction for my area. None of the calls nor any emails were answered. This is typical AFM behavior since the AFM never, at any time, provided me with any benefit nor did the AFM ever provide me with any support. In my opinion, the AFM can kiss my butt in town center square and I'll give them 2 hours to draw a crowd. |

![]() I was commited to do a PBS special on the Life and Times of Arthur Godfrey. The theme of the show would have been the title, "Seems Like Old Times" but since I dropped out of AFM 802 in 72, the union wants me to pay $1.200.00 to be reinstated. In addition If I were to perform as an act as well as a member of the orchestra that would be doing the sound track, I was informed that I would have to join AGVA American Guild Of Variety Artists. Since I was the winner of the Godfrey Talent scout show in 1955, I was asked to audition as well. I told the gal I spoke with, Why? you have my cd is that not enough and she replied..Sir, that was many years ago and we dont know how you play today. I asked what her profession was and she replied, I was head of marketing for Home Depot stores in eastern division. End of story. PS. I really wanted to see the McGuire Sisters Chris, Dorothy, and Phyliss [This message was edited by Jody Carver on 30 July 2006 at 06:53 PM.] |

![]() quote: So Jody,I guess this qualifies you to go to a Home Depot in the East,& apply for a job in "head marketing",since you're a musician, huh? DUUUHH!! She should think about "marketing her head" somewhere else!! I don't know about musician's unions in any other towns, but the NashVILE local is totally worthless for club or road musicians. The only ones that they care about is the studio,TV,or symphony musicians! Besides,Tn. is a "right to work" state. They can't stop you from working! ------------------ |

![]() Membership in the musicians union isn't a complete loss. I was once called for one of jobs at a state mental institution, and it paid my dues for another year. ------------------ |

![]() This was in 7/28/06's "Dilbert" The boss says,"Alice, interview the guy in our conference room,& see what he can do for us." Alice, interviewing him, says,"I'm going to bonk your head on the table. If it sounds empty, you'll work in marketing." She returns,& the boss asks,"How did it go?" Alice replies,"I bonked too hard. We just got a new sales guy." ------------------ |

![]() The reinstatement fee here in the Atlanta local is less than $50. $1200 seems totally wrong for a reinstatement. |

![]() I'm the vice-president of local 820 here in Canada. This does not sound right. Unless there are outstanding fines present, all you should have to do is get reinstated by paying the annual fee of the local, plus maybe a few other small fees. Since it's a TV gig, the paycheck should easily allow for the payment of the AFM fees. There's something wrong with that quote you were given. Call local 802 in New York and ask about it. There's no way it will cost you $1,200 to become a member again. Also, if this is a show that is going to be aired again in the future, you may be entitled to special payments. This means that you will be paid for each additional future airing under the AFM's Special Payments Fund. This may or may not apply here, but it's something you should ask about if you proceed. I'm not sure about the AFM in the USA, but Canada's AFM is also collecting neighbouring rights on behalf of its members. If you are listed as a musician on any recordings that have received airplay, there's probably money waiting there for you. The AFM has people monitoring radio and television for this information. They're surprisingly dilligent. The AFM can be a pain in the butt at times, but there's all kinds of stuff there if you take the time to check it out.
