From "The Guitar Guy" website

quote:

Paper Roses

Words & Music by Janice Torre & Fred Spielman, 1955

Recorded by Anita Bryant, 1960 (#5); also by Marie Osmond, 1973

Loretta Lynn also recorded it, but I think it was later.

==========================================

G Am7 G G/F# D
I re - a - lize the way your eyes deceived me,

D7 Am7 D7 Cdim G
With tender looks that I mistook for love.

G G/F# Em Bm7-5 C C/B Am7 Am7/G
So take away the flowers that you gave me

D Am7 D7 Cdim G Am7 G
And send the kind that you remind me of.

Refrain:

G7 C C/B Am7 Am7/G G G/F# Em
Paper ro - ses, paper ro - ses;

G/B C C/B Am7 G
Oh how real those roses seem to be.

G7 C C/B Am7 Am7/G G G/F# Em
But they're on - ly im - i - ta - tion,

G/B Am7 Am7/G D7 D9 G
Like your im - i - ta - tion love for me.

G Am7 G G/F# D
I thought that you would be a perfect lover;

D7 Am7 D7 Cdim G
You seemed so full of sweetness at the start.

G G/F# Em Bm7-5 C C/B Am7 Am7/G
But like a big red rose that's made of pa - per,

D Am7 D7 Cdim G Am7 G
There isn't any sweetness in your heart.

Repeat Refrain:

Coda:

G/B Am7 Am7/G D7 D9 G
Like your im - i - ta - tion love for me.

Thanks for the replys.
Ron,I am sure I remember this song from the '50s and see that it was written in '55,I would guess that there is an artist who recorded earlier than Anita Bryant in 1960.
Thanks again

My archive says the song Paper Roses (written by Torre - Spielman) was written in 1950, copyrighted by Music Sales, ASCAP.

First recording was by Spade Cooley,
July/1950 RCA Victor Studio, Hollywood (session No. E0-VB-3716).
This version was meant only for radio use (never released on the record).

First version on SP record was by Cecil Campbell (RCA-48-0472) released June 1951.

Side A: Paper Roses

Side B: Tennessee Steel Guitar

Hope it'll help.

Not the original version, but how many know who played steel on Marie Osmond's version?

(I do...)

The only version I ever heard was that of Marie Osmond. The steel playing was fantastic but I just do not remember who played steel on the record.
