![]() It was fantastic! I am amazed at his energy level. Unless I'm mistaken he played non-stop for about 2 hrs. He looked great. Needed a few songs to warm up his voice but then was singing well for the rest of the way... getting loud on a few tunes also. He smiled the whole time, was very funny and entertaining, didn't break a sweat, played guitar throughout, changing capo all the time. The band was outstanding. Yep, Tom Killen got some sweet licks in on many tunes. The fiddle player, Jim Buchanan was ON FIRE! Overall the sound was warm and full, a bit light on the steel (are we surprised?). The bass was FAT, I give a lot of credit to the bass player as he was so out in front with his sound and didn't make one mistake. They had a female singer, she was very good. I have sort of a funny story: For the 1st 5 songs or so I was standing up in the middle by the staging. Every time I heard steel I would use my binoculars. Well, this singer kept standing in front of the steel so when I looked it appeared I was staring at her. And I'm telling you she noticed this and became self-concious about it. It wasn't until I moved to another spot she must have realized I was not staring at her. I wouldn't do that to a woman. On the other hand I was watching George a lot. Being the pro that he is he is completely unfazed by cameras, binoculars, whatever. I'm so glad I finally saw him. ------------------ |

![]() Reminds me of one of Lyle's shows I went to and some guy playing guitar,(I think) wss standing in front of Buck Reid, the reason we were there. |

![]() My wife and I just bought tickets to see George Jones at the Carolina State Fair on October 22nd. Only $15 per ticket! Thanks for the review, erik! It convinced me to go see a true living legend. |

![]() Bruce, it was $12 here. The thing is, there was probably 2,000 watching the show, and thousands more on the fairgrounds. They say the 3 day total draw is usually 250k. There is also a slide show on the screen during most songs. I missed most of that because I was watching George saying to myself, I can't believe he is here. Get the I Saw No Show Jones t-shirt because i didn't and figured I could it buy on his web site. Nope, you have to prove you were there. LOL ------------------ P.S. He announced a new CD coming out shortly that features artists covering his songs. There is no mention of it on his web site. So it's an exclusive, "you heard it hear first" announcement. ![]() Was it Ron Gaddis on bass ?. He has been with George ferever. Great player and harmony singer. Jody. |

![]() Jody, I am not sure. I did not think it was the guy that used to tour with him that had the long blonde hair, if that's who you mean. This guy was pretty mellow. He played a gold Jazz bass. Must of had active pick-ups because I had to look repeatedly with my binoculars to see he was actually playing. His fingers were barely moving. ------------------ -johnson PS: Okay, I just found some pictures online. It does look like him, his hair was cut differently. ![]() Jody,Ron is not with the Jones Boys anymore(as far as I know)...I saw him a couple of months ago and he was doing great-he is an old friend of mine of about 30 years and is the one who hired me to work with George 20 years ago.The bass player with GJ now is Vaughn Reed... ------------------ |

![]() Hey Steve, Not to hijack Erik's thread, but I'm glad to hear you've been in touch with Ron. I knew he had left the Jones band, but I haven't seen him since then. He is an old friend, in fact, I hired him for his first road gig (with Reeves) when he moved to town, but he only stayed for a few months. I'd always try to catch him and the band when they were anywhere close. When you see him again, please say hey for me. Thanks, |

![]() erik, I'll make sure and buy one of those T-Shirts that you mentioned. Also, George Jones & Merle Haggard have teamed up on an album to be released on October 24th called "Kicking Out The Footlights...Again". George is doing Merle's songs and Merle is doing George's songs. I'll be sure to buy that one when it comes out. The details are on George's website at: www.georgejones.com. ![]() Erik, I guess they are not using the Hill anymore near the tractor pull? That was a natural amphitheater and the sound carried to the hilltop. I don't think 2000 people would have fit but I could be wrong. I remember that stage was small and covered with a little dressing room. Anyway nice to see the birthplace of Stephen Austin still has one of the oldest fairs in the Country still running and still bringing in Country music. |

![]() Joe, show was at 7:30 I arrived at the show at 7:25. I can't say for certain what was near it. Yes, it was on a hill. If you come from the main parking lot you have to trek all the way across the fairground to the opposite side. Is this the same spot? I was guestimating the crowd. The fairgrounds itself was a madhouse. It was my first time there (even though I live 25 minutes away) and I'll only go again to see a live act. My supervisor, also a lifelong CT resident said he's never been there either. Kinda funny. A co-worker went to the Big E the same night. He said he dropped $100 just for parking, admission, and food. At least the Durham fair is very inexpensive. ------------------ |

![]() Erik, Sounds like the same spot, nice and cozy and everyone can see and hear. They had it away from the real noise, the rides. The Hill was a natural theater and if I remember right 4 JBL 15 cabinets with two Peavey CS800's and a CS400 for monitors covered the show. The Big E should be called the Big R. Rip off. However they use to bring in the package shows until the audience got younger. Now its the Big and Rich for the small and poor. ![]() [This message was edited by Joe Casey on 25 September 2006 at 08:21 PM.] |

![]() I'll always beleive George Jones is the greatest traditional country singer ever! I saw him back in the late 70s when he was still on the juice hard! His band kept playing and playing waiting for him to get on stage. After about 30 minutes, I think it was the bass player that come to the microphone and said George will be here shortly, he has one boot on and one boot off, he was still on the bus. ![]() and walked off stage after about 45 minutes, was suppose to be back but never came back on stage. It was worth the money to me to hear him sing, although he cut the show way short. |
