He was pretty well known back in that time, we (Al Bruno) and the rest of us did an instumental record with him.The Beatles song, Yesterday. I heard it played a few time on radio and Dick Clark would play it on American Bandstand. Aint no biggie, just another one I thought of. db

Anyone remember "Omo the Hobo Lobo"? He used to go around all over the LA area to clubs and walk through during the break times and strum his flat top and sing for tips. From what I understand he actually made a pretty good living doing this. He even had a couple of record albums out......JH in Va.

I remember Johnny Leggett from Vegas in the late 60's. He went with or was married to a chick bass player named Freddie Byrd whom he beat the crap out of on a regular basis. My gal pal Candy Bee, and Freddie used to sing Mohair Sam together at the Nuggett after hours.
That's also where I met Kenny Brewer. He was from Wichita Falls, TX. He had a super lead player in his band who owned a guitar store in Wichita Falls. Can't think of his name....

Hey Dayna, I lived in Wichita Falls for about a year in the middle 70's and played bass for about a month with Kenny Brewer at a club called "Little Brothers". Kenny's guitar player was a super picker named Jimmy Boggs. My band was being booked on the road by an agent in WF named Sam Gibbs. I wanted to get off the road and get back to California so I took the bass job with Kenny for a while. I introduced Jimmy and some other players in that area to the Bigsby Palm Pedal, they'd never seen on of those things.......JH in Va.

Hey Dayna, I remember Bobby Attwood, he was supposed to be the "heavy" in the Wichita Falls area. He had a son that was a pretty good drummer.

A blast from the past, I talked to one of the fine steelers from the old LA days, Al Parret last night. It was good talking to Al, he's 75 years old (or young) and still out there playing his Russler.........JH in Va.

How about ZED DIXON? (Steel player, played a Z.B.) Is he still living? He was playing at Evelens (sp?) Panama Room in Long Beach back in late 60's early 70's.

Hey Chuck, I talked with Blackie Taylor at Scotty's this year and Zed's name was mentioned. I believe Blackie said that he was still alive. I knew Zed from the middle sixties when he was playing for Jack Tucker at the old Pioneer Room in Norwalk. Zed was also a pretty good vocalist. He was just about the only musician I knew who also worked a day job! The rest of us were too lazy so we'd just pick 5 or 6 nights a week by Zed always held down a full time job in the daytime........JH in Va.

Jerry, I was in the Panama Club one night and Zed, (while playing a ride) lost his bar. It went plumb accross the dance floor. I think everybody laughed about it including Zed. I wen to my friend in the Machine shopaboard our ship, and had him make a steel guitar bar (out of stainless steel) and mount a steel ring where you could stick your index finger in it. I gave it to Zed, and he played it most of the time after that. Does anyone remember seeing him use it?

And I DO REMEMBER the button at the HollyWood on the Pike. No wonder Haskel May smiled all the time.

Yeah, those were fun times for sure. I just received a DVD of a benefit we did in 1984 for Hank Cochram who was a saxaphone & 5 string fiddle player of note. It really brought back a lot of memories. It starts off with Lou Martin on lead guitar, me on steel, Clark Rohn on bass, and Jerry Raney on drums. Later on in the show Al Bruno takes over lead guitar and after that, Danny Michaels plays guitar. Al Vescovo relives me on steel near the end. Some of the singers who appear are:

Jack Tucker
Billy Smith
Barbie Matthews
Goldie Real
Jesse Paul
Ron Laurie
Jody "Okie" Scarberry
Carol Randolph
Dotty Hayes (my ex-wife)
Larry Bales
Pat Evans

and a bunch of others....... One big highlight is the great fiddler/vocalist Billy Armstrong who comes on and does a mini show. Hank comes on near the end of Billy's show and sings some and then does some fiddling of his own. Billy and Hank both had played with Tex Williams' band.

In one spot, Lou Martin, Barbi Matthews, and bassist Carl Scroggins did a set of western tunes with some great three part harmony...........JH in Va.
