I know you guys are up on this. Who does the wonderful backup guitar work on all the popular King Cole records of the fifties?

Nat's best known guitarist was Oscar Moore, but he left in the late 1940s. After that, players like Irving Ashby, Billy Bauer, Herb Ellis, and John Collins worked with Nat.

If you are talking about the hundreds of classic "Nat King Cole Trio" recordings, with lots of hot take-off guitar, that is Oscar. But Nat changed his style completely in the 50s, away from jazz into more of a pure pop sound with little guitar.

Nothing else quite like the Nat King Cole Trio.

What are the best of those early albums?

Darryl,
I have a "box-set" (5 CD's),of the trio,that I bought some time back at "Sam's Club",for $19.95,featuring a total of (curiously) 78 tunes total. The set was released in 1991. Here's some "back-cover" info:

The label is: "LaserLight Digital
The address is:

Delta Music Inc.
2275 S. Camelina Ave.
Los Angeles,Ca. 90064
Tel.: (213) 826-6151

The full title of the set is:
"Nat King Cole The Trio Recordings".
I might add that these recordings are exceptional quality
BTW,just for the record,Nat "King" Cole's full name was Nathaniel Adams Cole.

I love Oscar Moore's guitar work with the Nat Cole trio. I thought I read somewhere that Oscar quit the music business early and became a bricklayer.

Mitch is right again-the original King Cole Trio was really great recorded all types of songs the piano and guitar were treat to hear. Mosaic box sets of Jazz put out a large (many cds) set of the Trio I think the first few years they must have lived in a recording studio. Great musicians.
when Ray Charles started he had trio and wanted to be the King Cole Trio.
Another surprise to me was the early years of Nat Cole a very busy songwriter. Al

Does anybody have or know of a really early (40's or early 50's)be bop type instrumental by the NKC trio w/ Oscar Moore called "Thats the Geek"?

That's the first jazz thing I ever tried to learn off the record (on guitar) from my mom's old 78.

I'd love to hear that again. It's been almost 40 years.

Above is an album by Oscar Moore.

Smiley,

I just ordered a bunch from amazon.com. A lot of the best ones are cheap.

Oscar Moore deserves to be better known. He had such a beautiful sound and feel and a tone like velvet. In the early 40s, Oscar played and popularized sophisticated chordal playing before that style was widely used and he had such tasty single note lines in his bag of tricks. For his time, he practically wrote the book on how to play mainstream jazz guitar in a piano trio. Barney Kessel and Herb Ellis certinly extendeed Oscar's ideas when they joined Oscar Peterson in the 50s.

Oscar's brother Johnny was no slouch either, played with Charles Brown and fronted his own band THe Three Blazers.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again:

The Nat King Cole Trio's "Solid Potato Salad" is one of the best songs ever written about potato salad. It's at least gotta be in the top ten.

What a class act Nat Cole was, and in a class by himself for that matter. The early trio years not only exhibit some fine playing from Oscar Moore but also showcase Nat's under rated ability as a jazz pianist, though he is commonly known and remembered by many primarily as a singer.

Anybody remember Nat's 15-minute tv show? I forget if it was once a week or what.

Also, Nat's brother kept performing in Phoenix until he passed about a decade or so ago.

Nat's brother Ike used to perform for years in downtown Kansas City. His marquee said, "Ike Cole, Nat King Cole's brother". I have the album by Oscar Moore. Nice licks. Has anyone heard the Diana Krall CD "Tribute(or Salute) to the Nat King Cole Trio"? Great stuff. "Errand Boy for Rhythm" really swings.
