...but I don't know who it was! Does ANYone out there have the Bear Family 'Connie Francis' box-set? Maybe the info's in there.

I've deliberately started a new thread for this, even 'though I think this is a serious contender for one of the best rock'n'roll guitar solos of the 1950s; there have been some suggestions when I've posed this question in the past, but nothing concrete has resulted.

None other than the jazz great George Barnes! Actually the whole band on that recording was all NY jazz legends; Milt Hinton, Dick Hyman, Panama Francis... So many incredible r'n'r records were actually done by jazz guys in NY. If you want to hear some more George Barnes r'n'r solos ( that IMO are even better than on "Lipstick" ) get the Janis Martin BF cd, there's some mighty and holy stuff there, and not just by Barnes, but by Chet and Hank Garland too.

Wow - that's great, Jussi - thanks!!!

How do you know this? I've asked the question several times here on the SGF, but this is the first positive result. Someone suggested Billy Strange, but that didn't sound right to me - this solo's too good!

What's BF, and who's Janis Martin? That's new to me...

Thanks again!

Roger, I'm a geek, and a guitar player, I just need to know things like that
Actually when you posted I remembered it was either Bucky Pizzarelli or Barnes, so I simply googled it.
With BF I meant Bear Family, the German record label, sure you're familiar with that! Janis Martin then again, now there's a subject. She was once billed as the female Elvis, was signed on RCA at the same time as Elvis. She made her first recordings in -56 and had a fairly succesful hit Will You Willyum / Drugstore Rock'n'roll ( with Chet on guitar ). She could've been a big star hadn't it been her decision to concentrate on family life, rather than touring. Anyway, she did manage to record some awesome rock'nroll with the best sidemen in Nashville and NY, plus she had, and still has an incredible voice. I've met Janis several times when we've played the same festivals in US and UK and she's a hoot, a super nice lady and she puts up a heck of show everytime. The Bear Family cd has her complete RCA and Palette recordings, great stuff!!

Hi, Jussi

Well, partly thanks to you, this is a real red-letter day! I now know who played that solo, and I've just taken delivery of my brand-new Gibson Custom Shop ES-355 in antique cherry red and with gold hardware - including the Bigsby! The finish and tone of this fantastic guitar are exemplary! I'm delighted....

Like you, I'm a bit of a geek, and a seeker of guitar-related trivia. I've just had something confirmed that, to me anyway, is very exciting... but it needs a different Topic heading, so watch this space, please....

Thanks again, Jussi, and, yes, I do indeed know and appreciate Bear Family Records! I have all three Everly Brothers box-sets, as well as the Johnny Duncan ('Last Train To San Fernando' - not the country singer) set and the 8-CD Lonnie Donegan box.

I am going to buy the Janis Martin collection sight-unseen on your recommendation (once I recover from paying for the Gibson!) - it sounds like just my cup of tea....

Roger R.
PS: I don't know what happened to the title of this thread - I typed nore than that, but it went a bit goofy!

I have Janice' CD coming from the Bear Family dealer in SC. He advised me against the 'Outtakes' disc as it had some duplicates - I should have it in a few days.

That was a good advice, the outtakes cd was somewhat of a disappointment to me, as it didn't include any of the most interesting Janis songs.
As for the 45 Smiley has, it's Chet on lead guitar, doin' some great fingerstyle solos.
