...check out Chris Difford's album "South East Side Story", 2-set CD/DVD with some real nice sparse (acoustic, some mando, dobro, vox) arrangements of some incredibly fine songs, especially the extemely tasteful playing of Melvin Duffy on pedal steel throughout

Wow, I would not have expected to hear pedal steel on that project. I bet it sounds amazing on his songs. Thanks for the heads-up on this CD.

"Play" from 1992 is their most underrated album IMHO-brilliant writing and arranging.

Tucker, that pretty much sums it up...I'm really knocked out by this stuff, absolutely lovin' it!

It was below my radar, so I gotta say thanks to Allison Brock who played a cut ("Tempted") a few weeks ago on her show "Wide Cut Country" - well worth it for y'all to check it out via the 'Net on CKUA every Saturday from 10-noon Mountain.

Cool stuff! I've been a fan since about 1981, starting with "Argybargy", but I could never keep up with their frequent personnel and style changes. Tilbrooks' voice is about their only constant.

Absolutely love them. I sure love the classic lineup, though, it's difficult to listen to them without expecting the support of the other (Diffor/Tillbrook). They seem to have a great strength as songwriters when they work together.
I have always thought that it was a bit of a shame that they weren't a lot bigger.

Count me in as another fan though it's been a while since their music's been on around here. I think I'll give 'em a spin! (Sounds like the concert DVD is an addition I'll need to make to the holiday wish list... )

Are they the band that did "Tempted by the fruit of another"? I always liked that song.

Yep, that's them.

I always thought it must've really pissed off Glen Tilbrook (the group's main lead singer) that their two biggest hits were sung by other members of the group.

Paul Carrack sang "Tempted", I think he was only even in the band for maybe one record...talk about stealing somebody's thunder! ...and Chris Difford sang "Cool for Cats".
I guess Tilbrook finally had his MTV day in the sun when "Black Coffee in Bed" was a hit.

So, does Difford do much old Squeeze stuff on the live DVD, or is it all new tunes?

Edited for punctuation...eats, shoots & leaves....

I was a huge Squeeze fan back in the day. IMO "Another Nail For My Heart" is one of the most "perfect" pop recordings I know. I remember spinning the single something like 30 times in a row just to keep the groove goin'.

Glen Tilbrook is a great singer/guitarist-accompanying himself with complex parts going on while he sings... the blend of Difford singing"unison" lines an octave or more lower was a cool signature sound...

I think just my favorite concert of all time was Squeeze (original lineup with Jools Holland on Keys) opening for Elvis Costello & The Attractions at Cole Field House University of MD I'd Guess late in '78 or early '79

I love Paul Carrack's voice almost regardless of what band he happens to be singing with. He was very much a 'voice for hire' in the 70s and 80s, and was on a lot of big hit records for bands that were otherwise unrelated.

Isn't it him on Ace's 'How Long...?'?

RR
PS: I worked with him on Carlene Carter's 'Musical Shapes' album many years ago.
