Anyone ever used a Special 130 with a 12"scorpion speaker for steel?

I've tried a Special 130. My personal opinion is it isn't built for the steel guitar. I couldn't get enough lows and I couldn't get the "boxy" sound out of the mids. The highs were flexible enough. I even tried plugging it into a 15" BW cabinet...that helped, but still no cigar. Ok for a practice amp and is a good 6 string amp. This could depend on the tone you prefer? Some players like a more hollow sound.

I have a Special 130. I don't like the way it sounds with either of my steel guitars. I have used it on gigs, but I am not happy with it on steel. I understand there is a mod kit for it. It has plenty of power for a small stage and it seems to have the potential, but the mid EQ is very harsh sounding. I am spoiled with my Evans FET 500 too.

I use it for Telecasters when I am too lazy to drag my Twin Reverb out of the trailer. It sounds pretty decent for guitar. After playing tube amps on guitar, I throw rocks at all solid state amps for guitar.

Just my opinion... there could be something wrong with the EQ section of the one I have. Maybe others have liked it.

Regards,
Terry

I also tried a mod kit in the 130. It enhanced the lows and cleaned them up a little, but the mids still wouldn't fit the steel.

The only pro player that I ever saw using a Special for steel guitar played with Darryl Singletary, but I don't recall his name. Anyway, the Special series of guitar amplifiers was never intended to be used for steel guitar as the equalization circuit is different between the two applications. From past experience, a circuit with a shiftable mid range is preferrable for steel guitar and a classic style of eq is preferred for guitar.

By the way what years was Special 130 produced? I picked one up last week in a pawn shop in great shape and at a good price. Its seems to sound just fine for guitar and has ample power to boot.

I used to have one, but it was stolen. I loved the way it sounded on PSG. I would like to find another one. I bet it would be a great amp for non-pedal.

The Special 130 was manufactured between the years of 1982-1988, then it was replaced by the Special 150.
