"Any" amp will "work" with a steel, but not "any" amp will "sound" good when used with a steel guitar. The Classic VT series will work, but with all of the knowledge about the design of the steel guitar frequency range that we have acquired since the early '70's, there are parameters that need adhering to. For example, a very flexible equalizer circuit is needed to obtain the sound that you have in mind. Through our years and years of amp designing, we've found that an active circuit is best suited for steel guitar. Also, a steel amp has to have plenty of power for bandstand use and a speaker that sounds good for steel applications. The Classic was originally designed for six string electric use, so the eq and speaker parameters are designed to allow the six string electric guitarist to obtain maximum use from the amp. I'm not saying that this amp won't work for steel, because Curly Chalker used two-two 12" Classic 50's for his rig. Try it, you may like what you hear. Let me know if I can be of assistance. In that same series was the Deuce(120 watts) and the Mace (160 watts). They had a lot more headroom than the 2-6L6 Classic. I used a Mace (6 -6L6 tubes) with Black Widows for Steel in the late seventies, wish I still had it! It was an awesome amp. This series of amps were hybrids, tube power amps and solid state preamps. The Musicman amps of that era were also hybrid amps! The early ones had tremolo and the later ones had Phase shifter(a great phase effect). The Mace was also the choice of the Lynard Skynard band, superb clean or distorted sound. Just my opinion, the Classic did not have enough clean power for six string for my applications. I attempted to learn and play steel on a duece with the eminence speakers and never relized how much difference a amp (such as a session 500) made as far as sound and inspiring me to actually practice and enjoy what I heard. if i had only known then what I think I know now.....------------------
