I picked up this killer little Gretsch labeled Valco Dual-Twin at the vintage guitar show a couple weeks ago. It has two original 6973 power tubes that look like EL84's (the sockets have tube type stenciled right on the chassis). In the new VG mag I found NOS 'RCA and GE relabled Westinghouse' for $29 each. Anyone else know of another source for these tubes or have any opinions on them? I'm not going to change a thing; I'd just like to have spares.

The amp sounds killer for 'dirty' rhythm guitar and breaks up really sweet and early on - no clean headroom here. FTR, it's the split chassis with the power amp in the bottom. Has two gold label Jensen C-10R (date codes 1966), tremolo with speed and intensity controls (superb and footswitchable), reverb (not so great and footswitchable), 5U4 tube rectifier and massive output transformer.

I had a Supro twin amp from around 64 and it had that 6973 tube driving the reverb and 6V6's in the output. It took me a while to find that tube as the reverb wasn't working when I got the amp. I didn't like it at all, and quickly unloaded it.

The 6973's were usually used in hi-fi gear, as they were very linear and clean. Although capable of excellent fidelity, they don't really produce much power, by today's standards (that's why you had them breaking up so easily). A pair will give you about 20-25 watts, max, running in push-pull...and less in other configurations.

Another great place to check out is www.thetubestore.com
They have just about everything and usually give you good info about the tubes they carry.

Yes, Bob, that's it! Is that yours? Steve, it sounds great at low volume (it doesn't get very loud). Looking forward to cutting some tracks on it. I finally have a new recorder on the way and plan to get busy in the home studio to complete some delayed projects.
