I am building my own external cabinet and was able to purchase a used 12 inch, 8 ohm, 180 watt electro voice speaker to go with my 100 watt archtop amp, just to give more of a wraparound sound, are these considered to be a good speaker? thanks for your input

I have three of them and I think they are great guitar speakers.

Great speakers.....They also designed plans for an AWESOME tuned cab!!
Boogie sold the cabs years ago, I got the plans from a friend and another friend built a cab that I still use from time to time.
Don't know what happened to the plans.

I had one for awhile & they do sound
excellent. Only thing is they lack
low end compared to an EVM 15L.
That's mainly due to the difference
in magnet weight. If you're building
your own cabinet, you can enclose the
back somewhat to make up for that.

Jay's right, these were basically a "low cost" version that was designed for straight guitar and keyboard applications. They'll do well as long as you can live with the fact they are an "average" speaker, and not ideally suited to low-end stuff (like C6th). The SRO, and the later EVM, were EV's best speakers, IMHO.

I have EV Force 15's in my steel cabinets. They sound better to me than any of the speakers I had in there before, which included JBL E-130's, K-130's, and Black Widow 1502's.

The low end seems about the same as the Peavey and JBL's, but the high end is much smoother and sweeter. They are rated at about 150 watts, but they have never shown any signs of distress being driven loud with my Stereo Steel amp, and I romp pretty hard on the low end of the C6 somtimes.

The big advantage for me is the lighter weight compared to any of the others. I don't know if the Force series is still available from EV. I couldn't find it on their website last time I looked.

As I said in another post, EV stopped manufacturing all musical instrument loudspeakers last year.

I recently purchased an EV DL15. It is an 8ohm 400 watt 15" speaker. Although EV dosen't manufacture the EVM series any longer, this top-of-the-line speaker is an incredible sounding speker for PSG. The efficiency of the speaker is outstanding. You may even need to turn the bass down a little. I have one in my Vegas 400 and in my Session 2000. They deliver a very well balanced tone, and are even a bit lighter than BW's. anyway as they say my 2 cents.
