I got mine. It is one great unit. I am truly amazed. I was with a guitarist this weekend that usually tunes with a tuner then tweeks this and that till he is happy. He tuned to the guitar temperment and never had to touch it. Randy you are right about the SE9 and the SC6 temperments, dead on the money.

On last Friday the tuners for my shop come in.I packet one out and use the settings for E9th & C6th to tune my Steel. This tuner is perfect.I put this one in my bag and drive
to a gig and used it again ...and perfect tuning.I used it on saturday and sunday again
by gigs .I must say this is the best tuner what was coming out for Pedalsteel.I will give this one never out of my hands.
Our fiddler used it too and was amazed.
I think its a lot money for a tuner, but I think this is a investment for a lifetime.

Mine will be here tomorrow. However the guitar mount won't be ready for a couple of weeks from the factory.

What is the price for one of these units going for? Where would be the best place to get one?

My V-SAM should be here in a few days from Musician’s Friend. I can hardly wait based on the positive feedback you guys are giving the unit.

I was a little concerned when I heard that Peterson announced the new VS-II shortly after they started shipping the V-SAM, so I contacted Peterson representative and fellow steel guitar player, John Norris.

He emailed me the following and detailed comparison of the two tuners, which I am posting with his permission.

It appears that for the most versatility, the V-SAM is the tuner of choice for steel guitar players.

I also gave him the link the Scotty’s site in case they are interested in showcasing the V-SAM in St. Louis this year.

Here is John’s email to me:

Dear Sam,

The VS-II will ship around the middle of the month.
I see you´re a steel player so I will first give you the basic differences
and then the diffences regarding steel guitar:
The basic differences are:

Selectable temperament presets:
VS-II=Yes (12) V-SAM=Yes (12)

Selectable temperament roots
VS-II=No V-SAM=Yes (12)

Programmable temperaments
VS-II=Yes (2) V-SAM=Yes (2)

Tone generator
VS-II=Yes (Passive) V-SAM=Yes (active - built-in speaker)

Metronome
VS-II=No V-SAM=Yes

Headphone jack
VS-II=No V-SAM=Yes

Thru jack
VS-II=Yes V-SAM=No

DC Adapter included (100V-240V universal)
VS-II=Yes V-SAM=Yes

Now for the steel guitar feature differences:

1. The Peterson V-SAM Virtual Strobe Audio Metronome -
Features for Steel are as follows:

Just Intoned E9 & C6 tempered tuning presets which are "root adjustable".
That means D9, B6, Universal type tunings etc. are also preset in the tuner.

There are 12 other temperaments in the tuner including GTR & BAS tempered
tunings as well as the common Equal temperament and two user-programmable
tunings for any off-the-wall tunings or to compensate for cabinet drop etc.
There is also a tone generator and a metronome included.

The V-SAM is an input-only tuner (output is purely a headphone jack for
audio tone generator & metronome).

This is the only tuner of its kind in the world, no other tuner has steel
guitar presets. It is the ultimate live/studio tool for the busy musician.

DC Adapter included.

Accuracy: 0.1 cent (compared with +/- 2 cents for other makes)

2. The Peterson VS-II Virtual Strobe Tuner -

This is an updated version of the previous VS-I (Tuner only).

Features for Steel are as follows:

It contains E9 & C6 presets but is not as flexible (no D9, B6 etc.) as it
does not offer the "root" feature, suitable for players who are settled at
regular E9 & C6 setups and just want to tune in JI in-line without having to
adjust anything on a tuner (on all other makes of tuner, the user has to
adjust for each note). The VS-II is also programmable.

DC Adapter included.

Accuracy: 0.1 cent (compared with +/- 2 cents for other makes)

This tuner will be officially released at Summer NAMM in Nashville this
month.

We have also designed a clamp to hold the tuner in position and out of the
way which fits anything from a MSA guitar leg to a mic stand, it will be
available in about a week.

Thank you for your interest in Peterson Strobe Tuners.

Sincerely,

John Norris

I have one on 30 day approval.
I think I'll be keeping it.

It's only been a day, still have a lot of experimenting to do.

The metronome "tap tempo/elapsed time" feature is really cool.

I just got my V-SAM and it is a good tuner. However, I do disagree with the posts that it is dead-on for the E9th tuning only because we all seem to tune differently and the characteristics of each guitar are different- especially when it comes to the dreaded and lowly "cabinet drop" issue as each of our guitars has a bit different drop. If one tunes the guitar to itself the problem is I have 4 guitars and they all have different amounts of drop. I tune the 6th string B pedal A note to 440 then the 4th string E to it (usually ending up a bit sharp)and then back to the 6th string open (then obviously have to retune the A back to 440) then everything else to this using TMPR (no beats). What this takes into consideration is cabinet drop and all of my guitars are different in this respect hence one setting will not work for each instrument. As a result of this I plan to use the 2 programmable settings to help eliminate the problem. The main caviot to this is that it all goes out the window when playing with a keyboard when tuning pretty much straight up makes the band sound better.

Are you guys using the C6 presets?

I usually tune C6 JST, but am giving the C6 presets a try. C at +10 seems a little out to me, especially for string 3.

The E9 settings sound right in the pocket and are pretty close to what I was already using.

Thanks

I use the E9th & C6th Settings and there
work both very good.
Not a problem at all.
I`m in tune with the Band C6th or E9th.
A great tool.
