Topic: EV Speaker Question

I have a model #EVM-158 OEM type---15" speaker---Manufactured 822. and it is 8 ohms. Can anyone tell me a little about this speaker. I have it in my 135watt Fender twin. Have any of Ya'll tried this model for steel? how does it compare to JBL's and BW's. Is this model speaker very good for steel? Or is it better suited for something else. Thanx in advance. |

I suspect what you have is an EVM-15B, (not "158"...never heard of that one). This is a great steel speaker, except that it rolls off a little on the high end, as it's a bass-guitar and organ speaker. I have a Lansing-D cabinet with two of these speakers...and it rocks! Due to the high end being not being emphasized, harmonics don't come through quite as loud as a JBL, but it's still perfectly useable (and about twice as efficient). I'd put it on equal par with the 15" BW. |

Thanx Donny, Your so right, it is a EV-15 "B". I got a flashlight and got my bi-focals aimed right and could read that it was not an "8". I am trying to learn more about steel and tone, and I appreciate your comments. |

I use the old EVM-15L speakers in my Webb amps.
Their frequency response is excellent with
more low end than the standard JBL E-130's
and less of the harsh upper mids.------------------

One more thing...Since Electro-Voice is no longer manufacturing musical instrument speakers, there's a good chance they'll be the "JBL's" of the future. In other words, they may indeed become "collector's items" one day. |

I have used EVM speakers for many years and they are my favorites. Mostly the EVM-12L but also the 15L at times. I have not tried the 15B but would tend to agree that the above post is on target.I have also used various JBL 15 and 15 inch models and still have a 12 inch in an old Music Man amp which still sounds great. As for the BW's, I have owned a few, but always disliked the tone. One guitar player I worked with a few years back stated they sound like an electrified cardboard box, I tend to agree. Lots of people use them, so to each their own... |

Talked to a friend name of Henry Cassel and he told me that he had talked directly with
a sales rep from Elevtro Voice and was told
that EV is still manufacturing speskers and
you could buy as many as you wish. He owns several of them and ijust found one bought new in 1978 still looked new. An EVM 12L but
have to turn the volume control higher on the Peavey amps than for their original ones. Don't know about efficiency as compared to newer ones. It sounds good enough.

I've got 12L's in a Twin Reverb, and I like 'em better than the JBL's. Maybe a little warmer. But I can't pick the amp up, anymore, since the handle is stretched out! |

Thurlon...perhaps your friend has "misunderstood". Yes, Electro-Voice (Actually, they're now the "Telex Pro-Audio Group") still manufactures speakers...tons of 'em. But, they no longer manufacture musical instrument loudspeakers. There are dealers who still may have some in stock, but they'll be gone shortly, and there will be no way to reorder from the factory...they simply don't make (replacement) speakers anymore!This information came from Barry Despard, who is in charge of Telex (inside sales) for the western United States. (I have his phone number and e-mail if you wish to verify this for yourself.) You can also check their web-site (as I did initially) and see that all references to replacement musical instrument speakers have been deleted. In fact, there is no mention of any replacement speakers available whatsoever. Their business now is "speaker units" (speakers in specially-designed enclosures).
