Topic: Good Speaker for Steel?

Hey folks-
I'm pretty green when it comes to speakers. Would a Jensen 1959 P15R 15" Alnico speaker be completely unsuitable for steel played through a 85-130 watt head? If so, does anyone care to elaborate and give me a brief tutorial? Thanks- |

a p15r? I think that is a 25 watt speaker. Plus probably worth a few $$... not gonna last long at all in a @100 watt amp. Just go with a Peavey Black Widow (model 1501) and be done with it. The only speaker that I knwo of that was designed exclusively for steel guitar, and had been in use for 20 some years.. pretty good track record if y8ou ask me. |

It's very hard to beat the Peavey Black Widow 1501-4. Like Gino said, it's the only speaker that's truly engineered and voiced to be a steel guitar speaker. It's originally based on the JBL D-130 with regards to voice coil and it's curvillinear shape. Unlike the JBL, you'll never blow one. Brad Sarno |

I like Celestion Classic 80's for the steel, I have a stereo Diezel 2X12 loaded with a pair of them and it sounds fantastic, more real lows than I ever got with an SE200 with a 15" Eminence. The higher watt Celestions never flap out the way the greenbacks do, and make each note on the steel sound like bells ringing. Sound good on tape too.Gerald |

As the others have said, the Jensen is not the choice for steel in an 85-100watt amp. Some rock slide stuff through a 40watt amp would sound good with this speaker.
If you are talking E9 country then go with a new heavy duty 15 like EV,Peavey,JBL etc.
If this is an original Jensen in great shape, you can sell it on ebay for enough money to buy a good EV or such. |

Me too. For quiet settings, I'm using an Altec 421 or 418. Also, it depends on the amp and cabinet. I have a couple of "Christmas Trees" and in one, the Altec sounds better, in the other, a D-130 sounds better. The BW sounds better in my Evans and one of the Standel cabinets, Altecs sound better in the old Standels and the MusicMan "rubbermaid" cabinet with the THD Bi-Valve. It's been a long time, but I blew one in my original Session 400 and a 'superstructure' in my Session 500. Loud band. I've learned my lesson. My volume rarely exceeds 3 these days, regardless of which amp(s) I use.  |

I use 4 - 12", 16 ohm Jensen speakers plus 2 8 - ohm horns. I have used these for over 30 years and have never had a problem with them or blowing a speaker no matter what the volume. I have been told that the speakers I use are the best in the industry. I don't know that's true, but they have been great for me. |

I'm using a 12" SRO Electrovoice right now that sound better to me than any other speaker I have used. (Black Widow 15, Altec Lansing 15, JBL 15 and an Evans 15)------------------

I was just going to say BW,, but ...I have had the same BW in my 500 since 79, and repaired a cymbal stand hole in it with a sandwiched piece of shirt and contact cememt. I did "retire it" about ten years ago until recently dual amping, but I have been told I play way too loud in some of the loudest bands. One of the main bands I played with, the female band leader remarked how my "compressor" light went on all the time, so I took a pair of pliers and broke the LED. I've never blown either it OR the one in my Nashville. Lots of times I've been told I was too loud even when not in the PA. I used to have to put in new caps in the 500 before I canned the ground pin, and had the speaker checked down to very low freqs and all the way up. No problem. Ever.. Maybe those new "blue marvels..?
