Topic: EV 12 L speakers

I'm looking at a pair of EV 12L's for one of my twins. (My other twin has a EV15B) It's a blackfaced early '70's amp. I'm wondering what to expect for tone. I'm playing tele and old P/P. I'm liking to get good low end. I might go 1203 BW's. Those of you that have used this setup and A/B'ed this, what do you think. |

James,
The EV speakers are very full sounding speakers and will be a little bit darker sounding than the Peavey or JBL speakers...They are great sounding speakers and will give you the bottom end that you are looking for ...The "L" in the EV stands for LONG...They also make an "S" which stands for short...The L models are long throw speakers and are therefore a little bit darker sounding over all but also have a better bass to them..
They are also very efficient so they should be pretty loud in any amp you put them in...Jim |

I've got 2 EV12L's in my pseudo Twin(Traynor Mk3) and am very pleased with them for both guitar and pedal steel. Very good bottom to them. To me, JBL 12's are too bright. Smoother mids. I also put one in my Blues Deluxe because I didn't like the speaker it came with. |

Jim, you oughta know!! I bought a pair of these boogers from brother Jim, and they are the stuff! I put 'em in a 135 watt Twin, and I can't pick it up, but it sounds awesome, wonderful(insert superlative here_____).
They sound "fuller" than JBL's, if thats good terminology. Don't let these speakers go to waste, put 'em in SOMETHING. |

I agree with all of the above comments. The EV 12L is a great speaker with plenty of punch and no shrill high end. I have them in 2 Yamaha G50-112 and in a MusicMan RD 112-Fifty. But their massive magnets easily double the weight of those amps.A twin with 2 EV 12L's needs an outboard motor! ------------------

Great speakers, but heavy! Also, about twice as efficient as the old JBL's. The 12L's were a redesigned (read: shallower overall) "SRO", which remains one of the best speakers ever made for high power and a clear, full, sound. |

Super price, so I went ahead and scored a pair. I will put them in and try them out next week when I get time. How do they compare with BW's?? |

I've got EVM 15L's in my Webb amps and they're
plenty bright. It's the EVM 15B's that have
a bit less high end. Both have more low
end the JBL's or the Peaveys.------------------

Thanks for ALL your fine comments. I know sound & tone is so subjective. This forum is so helpful to help one to "cut through the chase". There is soooo much experience collected and available-------it's wonderful, amazing!!!! |

You may run into a problem if you put a pair of 1203-4 BW speakers in a Twin amp as they are 4 ohms each and that would drop the load to 2 ohms if you wired them the same way as the stock speakers. |

Thanks Len for the tip, your right. I assumed you could get the 1203 BW in an 8 ohm, is this true? I went ahead and checked my new EV12L's before I bought them, and they are 8 ohms. Can't wait to try them.  |

Jim,I have two 12" EV's I removed from an early 80's Music Man 212HD amp. These are in great shape. I only removed them in order to install a single 15. If you are interested, you can call me at 228-255-7675. I am asking $150 plus shipping for the pair. ------------------

My experience with EV's are with EVM's. THese speakers have almost no color of their own. WHat you put in is what you get out. I have had and EVM in my deluxe for years. Plenty of high output and really nice tones. |

Does anyone know if I can I get one of these EV 12L's into my Fender Blues Jr. It sounds like it could make the amp more steel guitar friendly. As it is now, the amp is to shrill and needs more complexity. If that makes any sense. |

I think you would have to measure the available space in the Blues Jr. The EVM12L's have a very large magnet that is almost as big around as the speaker, and it is also fairly deep.
If you want a smoother tone, you might want to try a Celestion Vintage 30. For a 12, they are my second choice after an EV. Not as loud as an EV but they weigh and cost a lot less. |
