I saw a Standel Custom XV for sale, and am wondering if anybody has any feedback on these amps.
This one has the footswitch and instrument plug-ins on the front, and the speed/depth, bass/treble, vol/rev or vol/contour knobs on the top of the amp using stacked pots.
It's a two channel amp, Rev/Trem and Normal.
This particular amp has a Utah 15" speaker.
Also, The handle is on the right side of the amp, and removable casters attach to the left side of the amp.I believe this is the amp pictured in this ad that I found on ebay (kinda hard to see, but I believe this is the amp in the front of the lineup of amps pictured). http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=10171&item=3762380699&rd=1 Thanks for any info.

I repaired one for Rudy Alexander a while back Pete. It was an Ok amp. All transistor, not a bunch of power. Has those "pesky" sealed preamp units, if one goes bad you may be out of luck ever getting it fixed. I would not want one myself, however the early Standel tube amps are on my list of things to find! |

I have an Imperial XV, with an Altec 418B (not the original speaker) the first of the transistor models, that's a nice sounding amp. You may want to get one of the tube amps. I have several and they "walk all over" everything else.One of the amps in the ebay picture looks like the Super Imperial that I had in 1966. Which was a wonderful amp for guitar. |

I had one of those Standels....but I eventually used the amp up.....but I still have the JBL in one of my monitors in my music room. www.genejones.com |

I'm fortunate to have two of these wonderful, clean amps. I can't imagine it not having enough power. It's rated at 70W, but is plenty loud for most of my gigs. I've used one alone, both in stereo, and one with a Nashville 112 and all combinations are the BEST sound I've ever gotten.Here are pictures from my website I'm lucky that neither of my 1970 Custom XV amps have the sealed modules. I have had my electronics tech replace several caps and he has had no problems working on it. NOTE: I did put the Altec back in the one that had the JBL. It sounds better with the original Altec speaker. ------------------

Larry, those are great looking amps, but the one for sale here is a different model.
This one is also called a Custom XV, but is in a square cabinet (see pic in the ebay link above).
I think this one is probably closer to 50W because I was able to play it at nearly full volume (with a strat copy) without getting blown away.
I'll go back and take a closer look tomorrow. The main buy/sell/trader wasn't there at the time, so I wasn't able to negotiate a price, anyway.
I mainly want to negotiate a trial period. |

I have an Imperial XV w/2-15s and it is a great amp but the rev module is bad. A guy read a post of mine and gave me another head and rev tank. I paid shipping. I haven't done any swapping but the head works.My Dad got the original amp in a trade and it was mostly used for bass. After he died I started using it with Roland VG8. I could split my strings on my GR ready guitar and the amp could handle anything. Its set up in my wood shed. It is big and heavy. The speakers are warm and are 16 ohm. I am considering puting them in two cabs. I bought a Line6 head to drive them. I also have bid on fleabay for Custom XV's and they usually get over $150 and I stop. I was told mine was worth about $100 but I would put one bare speaker at $125. |

I'll buy all the 60s-70s Custom XV's you want to sell me for $125. The Altec 418B's that came in mine are worth more than that to me. Finest steel guitar speaker I've ever played through (and yes, I've played through D130's and D130F's).------------------

I saw a big-'un couple weeks ago. Has a plate that says Custom 30. I was gonna see what it sounded like, but there was no power near it and no forklift handy. Has 2 15" drivers. The back was closed in so I couldn't see what kind of speakers are in it. Click on amplifiers and scroll down a few to see a photo of this 'un.
