Weber recones speakers. I have heard both positive and negative feedback about them (mostly the ceramics) and I wondered if anyone has used Weber for reconing a JBL D-130. I had mine reconed the first time with generic guts; it sounded bad and then it blew. I later had it reconed with factory parts, it works well after 2 years and has always sounded great. Weber recone? ------------------ Lacquer Emmons PP,D-10, 9+9, D-12 Mica Emmons PP, 9+9, Nationals, Dobro-8, Dan-O's, '70 ES 340, Scofield-Ibanez ES, Tube Amps. I recently purchased a Weber reconed D130 and mounted it in my Twin (per Brad Sarno's suggestion). I think it sounds great. Check with Brad, he can give you all the technical gobbledy-gook. |

Paying shipping both ways kinda negates the economic sense of reconing...unless you're REALLY attached to that speaker! New JBL D130 parts aren't available, so it's a crapshoot as to how it will sound when reconed with newer parts, be they JBL or not. That said, I've heard good things about Weber and Orange County speaker, as well. One thing I waould ask any reconer is..."Do you demagnetize, clean, and re-magnetize the speaker magnet when reconing?"If they don't...send it somewhere else! |

Buck, you need to contact Ted Weber at Weber VST. Tell him you want the thin-paper D130 kit and at 4-ohms if that's what you need. I bought one of these from him and it's the only kit I've found that has the thinner paper of the original D130 with the paper edge. It sounded real nice when I got it, but after about 4 months it really smoothed out. It sounds great. I don't know of any other recone option for a D130 that will get you this close to original. All the JBL kits are the super-thick paper E series cones, and very few people seem to be able to do it at 4 ohms. This particular kit/speaker is not listed on his website. It's a custom cone order that Ted Weber had made for this purpose. Brad Sarno |

I recently had Ted recone the JBL K-130 4-ohm speaker from my Session 400. As you may know, JBL does not make recone kits for these anymore. However, Ted was able to recone the speaker to the same exact specs, including customizing the new voice coil to be the same size & spec as the old one, exact replica aluminum dome, etc.The speaker sounded exactly as it should. And to top it off, he recones 15" speakers TO FACTORY SPEC for ONLY $65 or so. He is the best thing to have happened to the old JBLs. So, Buck, if you love that old JBL, send it his way. Tell him I sent ya! Joe | |
