It's not the newer Classic 30. I see one for $200. I can't really afford old Fenders anymore. I would like to hear your thoughts on these tube amps from people that have used them. I had one of the old late 70's Peavey Classic models with 4-10's and it was a good-sounding tube amp. Mine was tweed, with knobs on the front. Another amp that I should have kept. |

I had one for a while way back in the 70's. It was a hybrid amp, with a solid state preamp, and tube power amp with SS rectifier. I thought it was OK for guitar, particularly rock sort of tones, but it didn't sound much like a Fender if that's what you want. Dave you should check out Peavey's new Nashville 112, I heard a friend of mine playing thru one last night down on Broadway and I was really impressed. It was very warm and tube sounding and very clean when needed. He played a Tele thru it but I've also heard Mike Sweeney playing his steel thru it and it sounded just as good. Give it try :-) Bob |

I have a NV112 that I love for steel. I don't like it for Tele. I need the tubes for guitar. Thanks, Dave |

Dave,
What kind of stuff will you play?
If you want mostly clean, the 50 watt range will do great.
If you want to have some good old tube overdrive, think more in the 35 watt range....
A real sleeper is the Gibson GA-20T Ranger or the Epiphone equiv. (pre 61) A GREAT amp, and pretty unknown (so far) so the price is still reasonable.
A Sears Silvertone XL40 is another, especially if you replace the stock speaker...
On the lower power side, the Kalamazoo Reverb 12 is sweet...
There are sooo many tube amps out there that most people don't give a second thought to that have all the tube mojo you could ever want.Jay |

DAVE the Classic 50's are GREAT amps..hands down..GREAT...Although I play Tele thru a Hot Rod Deville 2x12 and really like it as well. My bandmate, young Tele Ace Matt Cook plays thru a Tweed Classic 50 2x12, we got this amp for him about 6 months ago and just last week I bought another( he paid for it ) in Black Tweed. I would not hesitiate to get a Classic 50 /4 x10 if I found one for the right price. Atually I would buy ANY Classic 50 if the deal was right... We paid $400 for the TWEED in VG shape and $345 for the Black one..in MINT conditon...that was a find for sure... These amps are VERY loud and very clean..and they kick butt on the DRIVE channel too... My HR Deville has nothing over these Classic 50's , in fact, at times I think it is lagging behind... get one..they are a great value and a natural for Tele players....very reliable... by the way, don't confuse the new Classic 50's or Classic 30's with the older CLASSIC amps,( 6L6's and also very nice ) they are not the same. The new Classic 50's use 3 - 12AX7 preamp tubes and 4 EL84 power tubes. I suspect these amsp were designed to give the Fender HOT ROD series a run for the money..and they do.

The Classic 50 series is pretty nice and, from my experience, very roadworthy. I traded for one and played it for several years. My son has it now and it still cranks. I got the one called the Blues Classic which has one 15" speaker. Pretty loud too! The one thing that you do have to watch is the pots for the knobs--they break rather easily. I also own a Classic 100 head, which I bought for playing in outdoor or big band situations. Unfortunately, it never gets used. I'm into the 35-40 watt territory these days. |

I owned a Peavey Classic 50 2x12 for a while about (2)-yrs. ago, when I switched back to an All-Tube Amplifier. I thought it had a good sound, however; at home in the house the ‘cooling~fan’ was very annoying to me! So, I traded it away for a new Re-Issue Fender Twin~Reverb Custom™ 15”. [nearly (2)-yrs. ago] Now I’m quite happy with my sound!

Hey, Dave --I have a Classic 50 that I really love -- it actually even sounds pretty good with pedal steel. Unfortunately, in the places I play, it's almost too loud for guitar. I got a Classic 30 that will start to push the tubes at a much lower volume. Dollar for dollar, they're both great amps and you wouldn't go wrong with either. Boo |
