Ron, lay the basket flat on the front side. Put something straight but soft that won't damage the voice coil on the coil side. The SB measures 3 1/2" tall. The DT measures 4 1/4" tall.

Also on the ones that I have, the basket ribs are square or rectangular in shape on the DT. The SB basket ribs are rounded, kinda like a semi-circle. Both have a smooth cone and alum. dust cap.

The tag is the sure way to identify a 1501-4DT as many of the 15" BW's have similar dimensions.

Hope this helps. E me if I can help you further. JO.

[Edited to add that I was assuming the baskets were not installed. They might be harder to measure if the speaker is assembled and/or installed in a cabinet. Nonetheless, the basket depth measurement, magnet NOT included, will be as above or really close.]

I've been wondering about this too; I just received and installed a new black widow.

I'd been wondering whether I got the 1501DT-4 or the 1501-4 shallow basket. The label on mine says "model 1501-1" with no "DT" designator anywhere on it.

The basket ribs ARE rounded, but there's no presence of a 1501-4 shallow basket on Peavey's web-site; the spec sheet that came with my new BW also had no mention of a 1501-4, just the 1501DT-4.

Jerry, from your description it looks like I have the shallow basket; I also dealt with a dealer that I have tremendous confidence in. In addition, the speaker sounds great. So I feel pretty good, but I'm still easily confused.

Bob, as always I defer to Mike Brown on all things Peavey, but I'm pretty sure all the new 1501's are SB's. I don't believe they have mfg'd any of the 1501 DT's [longer, deep throw baskets] since they went back to the SB a few years ago. I think these are simply marked 1501 and 4 ohm.

The suffix designation is only used on the DT's on the speakers/baskets that I have.

There have been a few different models of speakers made for steel guitar over the years, thus my disclaimer above. It is my experience that the SB has a definite low end advantage, but some guys still prefer the DT's for a more even response across the tonal range.

I have some of each including a couple of the old Spider Web 1501s and have done a bit of experimenting with them. I am still undecided after all these years. One thing's for sure....either of them will sound great with your steel guitar!

Thanks again Jerry - I've had an e-mail in to Mike on this question for a few days - I think he's busy with ISCG prep, so I thought I'd chime in on this thread until I heard from him.

I'm sure he'll come back with an answer.

Thanks,
BK

Edited to add that maybe Mike and Peavey were affected by Katrina. If so, I hope the impact was small and that they and their families are OK.

BK
