MCM ain't givin' no electrolytics away. Pricing is stiff in their catalog. Went to the Digi-Key catalog and their prices are much more reasonable but selection is confounding.

I'm looking to select a 25 Volt 4700 microfarad radial lead capacitor. Here's what DigiKey has:
Panasonic M Series - $1.72 ea.
Panasonic NHG Series - $1.84 ea.
Panasonic FC Series - $2.71 ea.
Panasonic TS Series - $2.39 ea.
Nichicon VR Series - $1.91 ea.
Nichicon VZ Series - $1.36 ea.
Nichicon PW Series - $1.86 ea.
Nichicon HE Series - $1.99 ea.

The only outlier I can see is the Panasonic TS series which has a larger form factor. The target application is to recap several audio amplifiers to eliminate hum in the DC and I don't want to have to do it again for a few years.

Any recommendations as to which series to select? Many thanks for any advice offered.

Ray, I've always liked the Panasonic TS series. But honestly, I think any of those would be just fine for most audio power supply situations.

whats the cap for?

I like the nichion caps - really, there is not much difference these days as the production is way better than back in the day.

however, if you are replacing an old cap in a tube or old transistor amp or something, a high ESR brand new cap might strain the power supply or its surrounding components. Really you have to have experience or prepare to let out some magic smoke.

Brad & Tim, thanks for the recommendations. I've got a Sansui power amp, a Soundcraftsman mixer panel, a Yamaha pre-amp, and a Realistic receiver, all solid state, that all have too much hum. They all need recapped. Gonna do it over the holidays else my better half will be finding stuff for me to do that maybe I'm not yet ready for. So, I'm planning my "escape" activities (between practicing minors and augmenteds...).

I'm gonna try a few of the Panasonics TS's and some of the Nichicons HE's then. I'll let ya know what happens. Hopefully the smoke will stay in the packages Thanks again.

Ray, if you're concerned with long life, the only two to consider would be the Panasonic FC, or the Nichicon HE.

Donny, I should have known... One gets what they pay for. Thanks again.
