Topic: Hot Rod Deville 2x12's or 4x10's?

Anyone had experience with both? Pro's & Con's please. Also, how does the Deville compare in tone to the Re-issue Twin with 2-12's. I like a lot of bottom end!

4x10's will give you a bit more MID and bright as opposed to the 2 x 12's, which is the one I have. And it is moving 40" of air rather than 24" of air...I like 10's for a very clean Tele' style and that would be the primary reason I would change to 4x10's. Both amps have great bottom end but the 12's appear to have a bit more sonic somthing or other, hard to describe. Both KICK butt.. but, side by side with a Twin RI, I don't believe they should really be compared. The TWINS sound very sterile to me, they do offer more power ( 85 or 100 watts?) so I believe the preamps are much cleaner and at a moderate volume, just like the early TWINS, they will NOT go into the CRUNCH mode. I think if you are playing MORE Steel than Guitar, the TWIN is a fine amp, But if you need to rock out with the 6 stringer, you will need a stomp pedal. The HR Deville is a good amp for Steel at moderate volume,( 60 watts) but it can be a tad bright. For the 6 Stringer, geeze..get out of the way ! I think the big complaint about the HR Series is that the Reverb is a bit grainy. get one of each ! t |

Tony thanks for the help on both topics. I have decided to keep the HR Deluxe for small gigs and home and buy me a Twin for the larger stuff. I am not certain the Deville will work for the larger gigs but sure the Twin will. This is quite a switch for a dedicated long time SS user. But I am finding the Fender tube stuff that satisfying. Thanks again!

David, I think you are correct. I would never consider taking the HR Deville alone to a larger gig, but I would, did, take my Twin to all my gigs for 25 years , seeing it was the only amp I owned for two decades.I think the best way to describe the HR Deville is.. Sounds just like the HR Deluxe with a lot more headroom and overall gain..but it is NOT a TWIN, and never will be  It may be worth stepping up to the HR Deville from the Deluxe though, as the Deville certainly is much more capable of handling the Steel on smaller/ moderate sized gigs. good luck t [This message was edited by Tony Prior on 06 July 2006 at 01:02 AM.]

I just got the new Eminence 10 inch speaker called the Lil' Buddy , a 60 watt unit in the Patriot series. you may want to consider puttting these in your amp as an upgrade. I got mine frrom Parts Express with free shipping for around $50. They have a hemp material cone and a really well made heavy duty frame . The midrange presence is really different for this speaker and it's extremely efficient ... and loud. At first I thought it was more ideally suited for Tele and overdriven lap steel but as the speaker breaks in and the response smooths out I'm really enjoying using it with my Fender Double 8 . I have a Hot Rod DeVille 4/10 it was never what I expected. I started to try and trouble shoot the problem and it was a chore. First the power tubes(6l6B) sockets were starved for solder. Re did those changed to G.E. tubes 6L6GC, Blackface type tubes, changed the 12AX7's out, rep;aced them with 12AY7,12AX7A Sylvana tube, and a 12AT7. Sounds as good as the Twins and I've had three of those Blackface and Silver face.
Lots of head room and good bottom. For steel you will probab;y set highs at 3-4, mids 3-4 and lows 3-4 as a bench mark to tweak from.
My drive is 4-5, Presence 5-6.
Before the re-work I was ready to sell this puppy now I'm happy. I also play through a Session 400 and 400LTD for stero sound and a Pro-Fex.
The Fender amp is much louder now and very clean. A bunch for 60watts. |
