Quoting from Dave Hunter's excellent "Guitar Effects Pedals: The Practical Handbook" p66:

"In the 'Weird and Wondrous' category - otherwise known as 'What The Hell Were They Thinking?' - Fender earns a gold star for the bonkers Dimension IV. The whirling oil-filled drum was intended to induce spacey warbling effects when plugged in between guitar and amp, and supposedly sounds pretty damn nifty - if you can find one that hasn't leaked its apparently PCB-laden oil all over the circuitboard"

Sounds fun!

Also known as the "3 in 1", or "oil-can reverb unit".

Yep, you too can get a "spacey" sound (and cancer from the PCB's) if it ever leaks.

The 'Ray' in Tel-Ray is Ray Lubow, founder of Morley pedals. Morley went on to make two models of the oil can units; one rotating speaker and one delay (petroleum delay?) . David, if you use this type of link, we won't get the dreaded scroll bar.

I have seen a few of these over the years, and have NEVER seen one that works. I heard rumors that a Sacred Steel player has one of the Morleys that works, but I have yet to confirm it. They sure look cool though!

The oil can units use transformer oil.. It is still available and if the units don't work and the motor runs, and turns the rubber band/drum, they usually just need more oil... It tends to leak/evaporate.

I just bought an original Tel Ray, a vintage tube amp, and a nice old MIJ 12 string acoustic guitar, all for $70..
I sold the Tel Ray for $380, the amp for $200 and the guitar for $70!!!

The oil can units have a cool creepy warbling echo.. very "vintagy", but I prefer a good analog delay... They are weird oddities that go for a fortune because they were made in the 60's.. IMHO, they are more of a headache than they are worth.. bob

I've tried to use the [url - [/url] thing to shrink Ebay links, but I must be doing something wrong?

I had a similar device, different manufacturer, 35 years ago. I put on a home made pedal that used a light dimmer. Don't know why it worked, but it sure did! It actually pitch bent the echo up or down depending on where you started with the dimmer pedal.

But, but, that just links me to the Ebay page again, it doesn't tell me WHAT I'm supposed to put in front and behind of it to make it shrunken when I try it - I really am trying...

(Addendum: Hoo-Ray! I figured it out! I READ THE INSTRUCTIONS - boy I hate that...)
