I am building a combo cabinet for a friend using his Tremolux head. Is there such a thing as a production Tremolux combo amp and if so can someone give me the dimensions?
I have the head so that part is no problem. I need to know if the sides taper or if they are straight and their width and the height of the cabinet.
Thanks for any help.

Jerry. If I understand, you are taking the Tremolux chassis and installing it in a cabinet with a speaker right. If so, then if you are building in the Fender style, the cab is as wide as the chassis. If you use 3/4" stock then you will have a width of 3/4" on each side of the chassis frame. Measure the width of the chassis and that will give you an ideal of the size of the speaker you can use. Some Fender combo amps are just a bit wider on the bottom so that the speaker tilts a bit upward. Not much.

You can always build a wider box. You will just have a space on either side of the chassis.

edit. Yes there are some companies that make these combo boxes. Most are for Bassman heads and Showman heads. The Tremolux head might be close in size to the old Bandmaster head.

So Bill, are you saying there is not standard size that I should make it so it would have the appearance of a factory combo amp? If that is the case then I will just make it large enough to accept the chassis and speaker.
Thanks,
Jerry

Since the Tremulux never came in a combo, then you can do anything you like. This amp head sat on a small Fender speaker cab with 2 ten inch speakers.

I sent you a link to a site where someone listed a BUNCH of cab. makers. Some really neat stuff there for ideas.

Thanks Bill, that answers the question. I wondered if Fender put out a combo Tremolux. Since they didn't I have nothing in particular to copy so I will just suit myself. I appreciate your help and the sites you gave me to look at.

Unless there was a special one-off made, the only combo Tremolux amp was the tweed version made in the late 50s. It's a great amp, I owned and used one for years - I only sold it because I generally prefer blackface and early silverface amps. When Fender moved to white tolex in the early 60s, the Tremolux went to separate head and cabinet, which continued through the blackface amps.

The Fender Amp Field Guide, http://www.ampwares.com/ffg/ can answer your questions about the dimensions on these various cabinets. I agree with Bill - a number of people build excellent cabinets. These days, I've seen several people mod Tremolux and Bandmaster heads pretty close to Vibroverb guts and put them into 1-15" combo cabs with JBL D-130 speakers. Sounded pretty good, to my tastes.

Right Dave.

I assumed that he had a head from a piggy back cab. If he has a tweed chassis, that is worth getting a repro cab for. Those sound very nice.

I'm assuming you have a Blackface
Tremolux head.
The sides do have a taper.
I've built several of these combos
with 2/10's 1/12 and 1/15.
You sort of build them from the
inside out. Its critical that the
inside dimension be 1/8" wider
than the OD of the chassis.
18" tall is a good height except
for a 1/15, it should be 20" tall.
All my measurements are at home.
If you can wait till Tuesday
I can give you acurate measurements.

The Tremolux certainly did come in a combo - but in the tweed era.

From the blond and brown amps on they were head/cab. Low wattage, small speakers. I have seen them turned into combos - the one caveat is you KEEP the original cabinet so you can return it to original form.
