I'm shopping for a new pick-up and would like some input to make a choice between the 710 and the XR-16. I play a Mullen, wood body/wood neck guitar, so it's not a thin/bright guitar to start with. I currently have a 710 on the E neck and like the sound of it. But I also play lots of C neck (standards, lighter jazz) and am interested in what pick-up might do the best there. All ideas welcome.

Thanks.

Daniel - The folks at Mullen recommend the 10-1 pickup for their guitars. Bobbe recommends the same thing. They seem to match up well with Mullen guitars.

I have 710's on both necks of my Franklin and they do well - lots of punch on the E9th and lots of "body" if I want it on the C6th.

The Carter Guitar Co used to have samples from many different pickups on their website. Check it out as it gives you a chance to hear the differences. They are all played on a Carter, of course, and on E9th but it still allows comparison of the various Bill Lawrence and George L's pickups.

The 710 is a great pickup if you adjust it a great distance from the string, between 3/16 and 1/4 of an inch for my taste.

Based on mounting LXR-16 pick ups and L-710 pick ups in a D-10 push pull Emmons and a D-10 Franklin:

L-710 pick ups are very bright with a full low end, very touch sensitive and responsive. These are best suited for guitars that are acoustically medium or darker in tonal response. The pick ups are also optimal with a signal chain that is not highly buffered. Pick up height may be best at approximately 3/16”.

LXR-16 picks ups are not as bright, have more midrange but with a high-end presence. Low end is still good. Response is also good. These are best suited for acoustically bright guitars or a signal chain that is highly buffered. It helps to boost the treble and cut the midrange on the amp or pre-amp. Pick up height may be best closer than 3/16” to increase highs and lows.

Hope that helps.
