I am replacing the pots on my lap steel. The Volume pot is Mighty Mite (MM)A250K and the tone pot is a MM B250K. The local music store only carries the A250k is there a difference?

Don't exactly know what A or B means on the pots, but if there is a difference, it might just be in the taper.

Yes, the taper--pretty sure one is linear, the other is log (audio). I forget which is which.
The result of using the wrong one is that you will have all the action at one end--beginning or end--of the rotation. IOW, for instance---all the volume (or tone) change will occur from 1-3. Then nothing much more from 4-10. No other harm done.

The "A" is an audio taper pot, used for volume controls. The "B" is a linear taper pot, usually used for tone controls. Either will substitute in a pinch for the other, with a somewhat different "action" when the knobs are turned. In other words, you'll have the same tone and volume from your guitar, but it may appear to be at different knob settings, or be more "touchy" in the adjustment.

Now I know that I need both an A and a B pot. And why - Love it when I learn why. thank you for your inputs - they were greatly appreciated.

Actually Kenn, you don't need a type B pot for your tone control unless you're using it in your playing and need to keep the same "feel". It will sound exactly the same as a type A pot at either end of its rotation.

Almost all guitars and amps made use type A polts. Linear pots are used for tone controls on some high-end audio equipment - and as said, it's a different "feel" to the sweep, that's all. Either end is still the same. Most guitar techs buy 50k, 100k, 250k, 500k, and 1 meg pots in bulk - and what they end up with are type A pots.

For the 'kikala Hawai`i' pundits out there, If you use a 'B' type pot, the Violin effect (Done with your pinky) is so much easier to execute.
