How close to the strings should a pickup be set at? Looking for advice....

Ron, Here is a generalization. The pickups should be as close to the strings as possible without being so close that the magnets affect (dampen) the vibrations of the strings. A general rule for exposed magnets is being able to slide 1 quarter under the treble strings and 2 quarters under the bass strings. From that starting point lower the strings or raise them so that they sound good to YOU. If your pickup has a plastic cover, you need to start closer.
Ultimately it is about the sound. Set them for your personal taste and style.

However, with the Lawrence 710 pickups the distance between the pickup and the strings should be at least 3/16" (I have mine set a "loose" 3/16). Too close and you will get some distortion and lose tone body.
